Anthropologist Nelson tells of his self-sufficient existence on an island near the Pacific Northwest, practicing a respect for the wilderness learned from the Alaskan native peoples. ``Whether he is describing the remains of a clear-cut forest, a beached whale or a night in a petrel rookery, Nelson gives a notably sensitive portrait of island life,'' PW saidpk . I have read this book a couple of times. At the time I was craving an escape to nature but was unable to get away. The scene in which a hummingbird visits briefly with the author in his office is especially appealing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves nature. It is a fairly small book so would do well on a backpacking trip!
