Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
At 29, Moira Maclean considers herself too old to wed, and she's pleased to think she need never surrender her precious independence. She's made a place for herself in a Scottish convent, using her talents for increasing crops and flocks to bring prosperity. It takes only moments to shatter her contented life. A traveler arrives, claiming to bear a message from Moira's dying father, declaring that the only hope for her clan is for Moira to wed him. So, within the hour, she marries the stranger, gives him her virgin's blood -- and learns that everything her new husband has told her is a lie. Her father not only still lives, but she's just wed her clan's most bitter enemy. Still, those bold falsehoods bear valuable fruit -- a truce to end years of bloodshed, and an innocent life growing within Moira to bind their rival clans together. When her husband returns to the convent to claim her, Moira agrees to honor the sacred vows he won from her with lies -- and finds that the handsome trickster is determined to court her, and to defend the promises of peace and love he made to her with his heart's blood.
Publishers Weekly
The clan battles of 16th-century Scotland form the backdrop for this slow-moving romance from Fletcher (Irish Hope, etc.), which starts with a bang but unfolds with formulaic leisure. Moira Maclean, daughter of a clan leader, has grown up in a convent, virtually forgotten by her father until, at 29, she's considered too old for childbearing. Suddenly a battle-weary warrior named Ian Cameron appears with his men, shattering the nighttime peace of the convent. He brings a token from her father, who he claims insisted on his deathbed that Moira marry Ian to prevent a war. Alarmed but obedient, she goes through with the hurried ceremony and its consummation, then is shocked when more men arrive her father, very much alive, and her brothers. Furious that she has wed their enemy, they leave in disgust. Ian departs as well, but returns a few months later to claim his wife. While on their journey to join his clan, she finds that their marriage really did prevent a war but, for reasons unknown, someone is now threatening her life. With its feisty heroine, sensitive hero and numerous sex scenes, this book should satisfy Fletcher's fans, but others may be disturbed by her hero and heroine's anachronistic behavior (Ian's assurances to Moira that he'll always "be there" for her and her relentlessly defiant attitude toward him). THE BEST I'VE READ!

WOW! This has to be the best romance I've ever read! I would recomend this book to ALL! This book kept up the suspense from beginning to end. And the passion and love that grew between the main characters leaves you just breathless and longing for more. I didn't want this book to ever end! I couldn't put this book down and ended up reading it twice in 2 days, it was that good.

    exciting Scottish historical romance

In 1513 the death of King James IV has led to chaos and clan skirmishes throughout Scotland. Ian Cameron of Glencoe arrives at a convent claiming to have been sent by the father of resident Moira Maclean. Ian informs the Mother Superior and Moira that her father lies near death and wants her to marry him immediately. Stunned, she reluctantly agrees and they wed and consummate their vows. Not long afterward, her father arrives only for Moira to learn that she married the leader of her clan¿s greatest enemy.
Ian feels this marriage will insure the peace, yet he deserts his bride. Moira wants to forget how she has become a pawn of clan politics and return to her serene life. However, she now carries Ian¿s heir. Ian comes back for his wife not only because he fears an assassin seeking trouble between the clans will kill her, but also because he realizes he loves his gentle spouse. Now he must find a way to gain her trust first.
Once Scottish historical romance fans leap past that Machiavellian-like Ian is in love based on one quick night, they will enjoy this well-written tale. The story line is filled with action and counteraction as the clans¿ leaders and the assassin battle for supremacy between each other. The lead couple is a delightful duo and the secondary characters provide strength to the plot. Readers will enjoy Donna Fletcher¿s latest historical ISLE OF LIES once the plot shifts into gear.
Harriet Klausner

    Good! Good! Goody!

Married to unite the clan, how romantic! Now she must journey to her new home with her new husband. She is quite knowledgeable in healing, plants, numbers, and such - things a woman should not be interested in. He proudly defends his clan and has much to deal with as laird. The newlyweds struggle to co-exist. Very well written, great characters, romance & longing, and an intriguing plot.

    Verbose much?

I'm on page five hundred something and very little has happened so far. The author has established (over and over) that the heroine is a stubborn intellectual. If I were the hero here, I'd want nothing more than to smack her. I'm not one to give up on a book, but I won't be finishing this one.

    Excellent

I love this story. Nice for a change to read about an independent woman and the acceptance of her by our hero instead of him being intimadated by her and trying to change her. The story flows over 1600 pages. Good read. Highly recommend

Couldn't force myself to finish it.

I have been trying to force myself to finish. I cannot stand Moira, and if I have to read how intelligent she is one more time while another ridiculous question pops out of her mouth. She is basically book smart, people stupid. If it were done differently I would have been excited that she was educated, but with her I felt she was rude and self important always self centered wanting her way like a spoiled child. She seemed to believe she knows it all, and will dominate everyone. She is sneaky and feels she is always right, I could go with it for a while with the excuse she was sent away as a young girl. Eventually I just grew irritated and stopped caring about what happened.

    Wonderful read

What a wonderful read it was. I enjoyed the strength of the woman in the story. They well matched the men and often put them in their places.

Long book. I read it in a few days. It was okay.

Really long. Kinda hard for me too get into it. Was a filler for times I had nothing else to do. Wasn't drawn into the story. Not the worst book but okay for the price I paid.

    Loved, loved, loved it!

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a quick, enjoyable read. I love reading romance novels on my Nook b/c I can read them at work with no on the wiser on what I'm reading. :) I love the fact that education of women was stressed within the book--grrl power! :)

    Good read

I found the characters endearing although a bit dense at times, but overall I loved the story. I have read many of Donna Fletcher's books and so far I love them all.

    Great Read!!!

I came across this book & that's all it took to hook me. I have fallen in love with Donna Fletchers books. Great Story, Plot & Characters. Picturing the story in your mind is so effortless. As soon as I read the last page of this book I went right back to purchased the next book "Love Me Forever". This book will be a great one for you to try. When you are done with these try the 4 books about the Sinclair Brothers. That series starts with "Return of the Rogue". She definitely will not disappoint you.

    Good

This was a good read. Very lengthy. I did at times find myself getting bored with Moira. Intelligence, knowledge, blah blah blah. She irritated me at times. But still, it was a good read despite that, and I would read other works from this author. I have in fact, and the others also seem to be inexpensive and lengthy with good story lines.

Ian is by far the most romantic character that I've cared about

Ian is by far the most romantic character that I've cared about in a long time. Moira was annoying at times and simply overthought and agonized more than I could take but came through in the end. Secondary characters Blair and Anne ? He was great, she an annoying twit. A bit long but well worth the time investment.

    Unlikable Heroine............................................

Moira was so smart she knew everything. I mean everything about everything. How to start a fire, plant a crop, season food, run the accounting ledgers, make a better arrow etc. etc. Still at 29 years old when a stranger shows up at the convent and says your dad--a man who hasn't dropped by or sent a postcard in17 years---wants us to get married tonight and have sex within the hour she marries him. Really? Well except for that little lapse she was brilliant. We know this because the book repeated it continually. The book pages number over 1600 but its not a true count. Probably more like around 800 or so. Still too long.
