Overview

The Israel Memories Series provides an insider’s view of Israel, the peace process and the American-Israel relationship - stories only the author can tell. The series melds journey, insight and historic photos into inspiring story clusters.

In the inaugural volume, a courageous family background and fateful turning points transform Dr. Joyce Starr into a war volunteer, witness, and champion for the State of Israel. Her unusual journey catapults her to a key White House role and to the trust and respect of Israeli prime ministers, defense ministers, foreign ministers, and legendary Israeli figures.

Her unusual career – quasi-diplomat, activist, analyst and writer – is a story unto itself. This volume spotlights: initial hopes for the Middle East peace process; the revolution forged by Menachem Begin, Anwar Sadat and Jimmy Carter; a rare glimpse of Yitzhak Rabin; and General Arik Sharon's most heart-wrenching challenge.

Dr. Starr contributes precious kernels of Jewish history: how the Uman grave site of revered Chassidic master Rabbi Nachman of Breslov was saved from destruction; a rabbi who risked all during the Russian Pogroms; a rebbetzin (rabbi’s wife) who led the escape from sure death to American shores; brave Christians who jeopardized their own lives to rescue a Jewish family; and the determination of four generations of Jewish women.

A leading authority on US-Israel relations, she highlights the human dimension, while unraveling the policy consequences. The great divide between Israelis who can’t fathom the American mentality and Americans who know and/or “love” Israel in superficial terms, results in an emotional tension and yearning that affects so many - even at the highest levels.

Combining vivid vignettes about Israel with challenges encountered during her journey, her fast-paced series will enrich your understanding of Israel and those who loved her. Historians will discover missing pieces and valuable clues.

Editorial Reviews

Abraham Rzepkowics
“Joyce Starr gives the reader a rare opportunity to go behind the headlines. By allowing us to ‘overhear’ her conversations, she treats both the issues and personalities with a uniquely personal touch.”
Book Review Digest
“Starr is a storyteller, drawing her material out of chance encounters and personal experiences. This book is a very good read.”
Don Sider
“Dr. Joyce Starr's book was a revelation to me. She has woven many diverse monologues into a chorus.”
James Besser
“Sometimes the obvious still has the power to shock. So it is with disturbing truths that Joyce Starr tells in her new book. A well-known Middle East expert who has advised three presidents, she focuses on the complex variables that are often lost in the static of high-level diplomacy.”
Rabbi Dr. Yitzchok Aharon Korff
“Dr. Joyce Starr has provided a work which is at once spiritual and physical, poetic and real. Her fascinating presentation is both political analysis and commentary, and a warning of the risk in ignoring the issue."
