Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
The "Countries in the News" series grazes trouble spots of the world, selecting basic information about history, politics, culture, and current events. Each title includes statistics and brief discussions of both continuing problems and issues in the news, while offering students several prompts for further debate in the classroom. Israel will acquaint readers with the country's Biblical past and Jewish Diaspora, the dream of a Zionist nation, the Holocaust, and later establishment of modern Israel. Conflict with Arab nations is discussed, as are present struggles with Palestinians and terrorists. "Know Your Facts" sidebars present information on subjects like Jerusalem, occupation of the Gaza strip and the West Bank, the kibbutz experience, and universal military service. Among questions proposed for student debate: the right of return for Palestinians, perpetual remembrance of the Holocaust as opposed to moving on, and Israel's withdrawal from former Arab territories. As for the future, Israel's problems often seem intractable, given the challenges of conflict between Orthodox and progressive Jews, Arab and Jewish citizens inside Israel, and between Jewish settlers and displaced Palestinians. Criticism from the world community focuses on the determination of Israel and Arab nations to claim limited land and water, with both sides continuing to use reciprocal violence while resisting international efforts to bring about peace. Eye-opening information and color photos in this volume could inspire the further research necessary for an in-depth study of Israel. Extra features include a timeline, a glossary, and a list of useful websites. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
