Overview

Bobby Sherwood, a multi-instrumentalist best known for his trumpet playing and work as a rhythm guitarist, reluctantly led a big band during 1942-1948 after he had a surprise hit record in "The Elks' Parade." Despite the title of this CD, which makes it sound like the disc has all of the Bobby Sherwood Orchestra's released titles, there are several numbers missing along the way although these 23 do represent the very best of the band. One of the last top-notch swing bands to be organized before the collapse of the era, Sherwood's ensemble sounds at its best on such numbers as "The Elks' Parade," "Swinging at the Semloh," "Bob's Mob," "New World Jump," Bix Beiderbecke's "In the Dark," "Cotton Tail," "Sherwood's Forest," and "Bugle Call Rag." The band did not have many major names at all, but the ensemble sound was quite appealing, the musicians swung, and the arrangements were excellent. Highly recommended.
