Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this launch of a new series, a character from von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl series transfers from her New York City girls' school to Waverly, a co-ed boarding school upstate, where more scandals await. Jenny Humphrey gets to room with "supercool" Brett and Callie, whose former roommate was expelled last year. But rumors about Jenny quickly spread through campus, including one that she was a stripper (not entirely unfounded-at one of the schools she considered, for instance, Jenny was "offered Ecstacy and had taken her top off"). When Callie's cute boyfriend is caught nearly naked in their room, Callie pressures Jenny to take the blame, even though Jenny faces expulsion. As with the Gossip Girl books, the perspective rotates through several Waverly characters, and readers glimpse not only what they are thinking on the inside, but what labels they are wearing on the outside (readers even learn where to buy the outfit featured on the cover). Unfortunately, the zinger-filled Gossip Girl commentary that separated the chapters in the original series is here replaced by rather dull emails sent from students and staff. Still, the author serves up plenty of juicy plotting, and Gossip Girl fans will likely go for this, too. Ages 15-up. (Nov.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
VOYA
Jenny Humphrey from The Gossip Girls books stars in this spin-off series about the elite boarding school, Waverly Academy, and its A-crowd. New at Waverly, Jenny wants to reinvent herself; her roommate Callie wants a closer relationship-or at least sex-with her boyfriend, Easy; and Jenny's other roommate, Brett, pants Lolita-style for a teacher. Jenny's decision to rat out Callie for a tryst with Easy will mean expulsion for someone. It is a boarding-school soap opera, with sequels to follow. A quick read, the book is junk food that does not even taste good going down. The revelations of Callie losing Easy, Brett's phone-sex attempt, and Jenny's crush on Easy maintain the book's breezy, salacious tone. The characters aren't distinguished, however, and their collective wisdom is "I did so much E this summer, my brain is fried!" The author spends the majority of the book assigning a brand name to every object. The book is a deliberate shocker, portraying monied teens as eternally drunk and motivated by the bodily urges of the moment, entirely missing the complicated reality of actual teens. Like her rebellious teenage characters, von Ziegesar sees gratuitous mentions of sex, drugs, and consumerism as legitimizing agents, but both fall flat as empty, adolescent posturing. Now to the unhappy truth: Legions of Gossip Girl readers will want this book. Young adult librarians will have to make their peace with it, and hope that there is an SAT word or two to redeem it. How about lascivious? VOYA CODES: 2Q 4P S (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; Broad general YA appeal; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2005, Alloy Entertainment/Little Brown, 265p., Tradepb. Ages 15 to 18.

School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Jenny Humphrey, kicked out of Constance Ballard prep school for being a bad influence, decides she'll do anything to become one of the popular girls at Waverly Academy. Like the author's "Gossip Girls" series, the story is full of underage drinking, smoking, foul language, snarkiness, and label dropping. Sleeping around is casually accepted. Jenny rooms with two almost interchangeable big names on campus: Brett, who falls for the uber-rich newbie teacher, and Callie, who manipulates both Jenny and her boyfriend, Easy. The two girls are barely speaking because each one blames the other for their friend Tinsley's expulsion. Fearing that she will also be kicked out, Callie talks vulnerable Jenny into taking the blame when Easy gets caught nearly naked in their room. But Jenny is as attracted to Easy as he is to her. The school's dirty little secret is that you can get away with almost anything as long as you are from a "legacy" family of donors, which may explain why Tinsley is being reinstated at the books' end-just in time for a sequel. Jenny's references to "Old" and "New" Jenny are more confusing than illuminating as is the starry-eyed innocence that uncharacteristically peeks out of her persona at convenient times. Pass on this paean to possessions, perkiness, and ample breasts for something more substantial, unless you have insatiable "Gossip Girl" fans.-Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    Way Too Much Swear Words

This book has way too much swear words! This book also mentions sex way too much! This book would be safer for teenagers 15 years old and up who know what the word sex means. Mikaela Arsenault Salem, NH.

One of the Best books I've read

I really liked the book. Jenny starts becoming more sophisticated than she was in the past. Callie and Brett don't know why Tinsley was expelled last year. When Callie and her BFF's (excluding Brett) try to make Jenny look bad during a cheer, Jenny acts as if it doesn't bother her. Turns out that Brett starts dating a Mr. Dalton. By the end of the story, we find out that Tinsley will be returning to Waverly.

    Experiment!

If your ready to step up in your reading and experiment on having a good time, this book is for you. I recommend it to students who are older. The content isn't the best for younger kids though. This book is such a good book, i read the whole series! The it girl is about a girl who transfers to a new school. She gets caught up in all the action some what and people really start to notice her. In the book, they have emails between the kids and it's very funny. If you are ready to laugh out loud and a girl, you will totally enjoy this book!

    Really Really Good

I thought that The It Girl was a cute little 'not having to think about the plot' book. It was sweet, and charming, but it was simple--or so it seems. I really enjoyed reading about it, but I was somewhat puzzled at the beginning, not realizing that I had to make the connection with the Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl to the new and improved Jenny Humphrey.

The It Girl it is recomended

The It Girl is such a good novel the setting Waverly was perfect. I felt like I was right there next to these girls and Jenny, Callie, and Brett where my best friends. The way the Cecily Von Ziegesar described the character makes it seem like you really know what they look like and their lives. All the conflicts that they went through were go nerve racking and the outcomes always turned out good. I would recommend this book to any girl who loves girly books and loves to read. I really enjoyed it and I hope you do to. Also, I would say this if you like drama then this is defiantly the book for you. ENJOY!

A Must Read.. If you Loved Gossip Girl!

Have you ever wished of going to a boarding school? Leaving your old boring life behind, to start fresh? Well in that case young Jenny Humphrey does just that. Little Jenny Humphrey is a soon to be sophomore at Waverly Academy, a boarding school. This book It Girl is a series by Cecily von Ziegesar, the It Girl series is a series off of the Gossip Girl series. But Jenny's life before Waverly wasn't what exactly she drempt of. Jenny use to go to Constance Billard with the whole Gossip Girl gang. But, she was kicked out because of her behavior and rumors that spread around the school. So, she applied for an art scholarship to Waverly Academy. Once Jenny arrived she went through some strange and difficult times. She meet her two new roommates Callie and Brett, while also meeting campus hotties, Health and Easy. But, at Waverly her ultimate goal was to be the ¿new¿ Jenny and soon to become the it girl. I really enjoyed this book it's a great start to the series. Ziegesar's writing style is very descriptive, a lot like the Gossip Girl series. Also a different writing technique is that there is instant messaging going on every few chapters. Which I think makes this series different then the others. You have to read this book before you continue to read the rest of the It Girl series, such as Notorious (2nd book). I would recommend this book/ series to young teens who read and liked the Gossip Girl series. I definitely enjoyed this book It Girl because, it's fun, mysterious, and definitely keeps you guessing. The ending to this book is great and when/if you read this book you better have that second book handy. Then you can continue to read. But, the big question is does Callie really come back, and does Jenny get kicked out?

    a very unpredictable novel

Jenny Humphrey has a dorky personality and is very well endowed, which was getting her into a lot of trouble back in New York, so she decides to begin her sophomore year in high school at Waverly. She decides to change the way she acts, she matures a lot but the ¿old jenny¿ is still in her sometimes. Jenny arrives at the school and is finally placed in her room with new roommates, Callie and Brett best friends until they believed that one another was the reason for their old best friend Tinsley¿s expulsion. Jenny starts off her year getting into a heap of trouble, but for once it wasn¿t her fault. When Callie leaves her boyfriend Easy in her bedroom a teacher catches them and now they both must attend a hearing to determine their punishments. Callie takes no blame and Leaves Jenny with the fall. Bribing Jenny with materialistic luxuries. Jenny joins varsity field hockey and being the newby, is the leader of a sort of initiation cheer that is meant to embarrass the newest girl in front of the whole school, but with Callie being the field hockey captain and her trying to stay on Jenny¿s good side, she thinks really hard about what this might do. But unpredictable Jenny switches things up. Relations spark between the most unexpected couples and the most talked about hook ups happen at this under cover party school Waverly.
