Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The playful panache and wit of writers like Neal Drinnan and Matthew Rettenmund are evoked by newcomer Beck, spinning a charming, humorously appealing tale of 30-something New York transplant Daniel Stephenson, who chucks his famously popular drag queen alter ego "Princess 2Di4" for a more meaningful and fulfilling life. Faced with an uncertain future and devoid of any actual employment experience, Daniel is temporarily kept afloat by a generous check and some good advice from his wealthy and wise Aunt Jen. Now there's lots of time to cultivate his green thumb in the "comfort zone" of his backyard garden, and love looms nearby as Blaine, a beautifully mysterious stranger, sporadically appears in a window high above his garden. But what entanglements the weeds can't offer, a bevy of interpersonal dramatics certainly do: jealous fights erupt at his old venue Club Chaos, Daniel's old drag wardrobe is sadly auctioned off and ex-boyfriend Jeremy and Jeremy's new love carelessly blur the lines of their individual friendships with Daniel. Adding to the mix, his friend Ken's health begins to deteriorate from AIDS even as he manages an awkward administrative position at Blaine's advertising firm. Beck's narrative is crisply charming but overlong, too often indulging in the many deliberations of his melodramatic protagonist. Once over these hurdles, however, readers will find the overall mood light and the action (romantic or otherwise) absorbing enough to keep the pages turning. Beck's debut delivers fluffy, uncomplicated, G-rated entertainment for those who prefer their gay fiction whipped to a frothy consistency. (Oct.) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Great Gay Romantic Novel

This is a great romance novel about two different gay men. The beautiful and sensitive (and former drag queen) Daniel and the hunky gorgeous Blaine. This novel has great characters (main and supporting), conflict and romance. With a great Manhattan backdrop. A very touching story. Well done.

    This Novel Touched My Heart

In a messed up gay world we live in.....this book just improved the hope I have to find true love. I couldn't put this book down from the minute I started reading it. I stayed up late to read as much as I could. Beck has an amazing style and I believe he will go far with his career. I recommend this book highly to everyone I know because it is worth the feeling of warmth I get from his words. If you get a chance, read it! You won't regret it!

    Beck's Book Is No Drag

Timothy James Beck's, It Had To Be You, is my favorite gay novel this year. Beck is the kind of writer who maintains balance from cover to cover. The characters are sometimes outlandish, but very real. (female impersonation is never a drag) The descriptions make you feel as if you are there, too, but never get bogged down in munitae. The messages and morals hit home, but never get preachy. On that note, and most importantly, Beck's gay Manhattan is a place where people are people and characters are never charicatures. Gay men are not always flamboyant and 'fabulous.' Lesbian financial vegans aren't manhaters. And straight vs. gay is never an issue. It Had To Be You is certainly no Disney movie, there is conflict. But it's conflict that could occur in the rollercoaster we call life. And Daniel Stephenson, the main character, is a fun person to ride the rollercoaster with. Beck is on par with writers like Felice Picano, Joe Keenan, Christian McLaughlin, Andy Schel and Ethan Mordden. I hope his career is as successful, as I'm looking forward to another novel.

    a sensative book

It Had To Be You, is about love, understanding, sensativity, freindship, and family. Daniel is learning the meaning of growing up, what friendship means, and allowing his friends and family to love him, as he loves them.

    Witty Romance

What a great cast of characters! It was a pleasure to get to know the characters Mr. Beck created. Daniel, the main character is thrown one unexpected curve after another on his way to finding a career and a lover. The way he deals with these obstacles sent me into laughing fits.

    Funny and touching

The main character Daniel has a heart and a brain. I won't give away the love story and who it 'had to be,' but I'd be happy to end up with either of Daniel's choices!
