Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
It is always enjoyable to find a book that will appeal to both the voracious reader and the reluctant reader. This title will be a relatively "quick read" for the former and not too much of a struggle for the latter. The author examines a series of historical events and raises questions about their accuracy and about how they are presented today. He provides food for thought on such questions as, "Was the Boston Massacre the result of a patriotic outburst or was it inspired by the rabble-rousing Sons of Liberty as a propaganda ploy?" and "Why did Paul Revere's ride become so famous?" He also discusses some men and women who performed heroic acts but never appear in history texts, historical fiction, or a TV mini-series even though they made a distinct contribution to the American victory, such as Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Allen McLane, known as the Delaware Daredevil. There are 30 stories, each about four pages in length. The text is well written and should not be a problem for junior high readers. The print is large enough to make the pages visually comfortable. Good readers will take pleasure in the exciting stories and "having inside information." Less enthusiastic readers will appreciate the length of each story and the ease with which they can read them.
