Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Regular readers of Michael Bie's Classic Wisconsin web site (www.classicwisconsin.com) know that its webmaster likes to view history from a quirky angle. While other regional chroniclers bog down in dull stories of town meetings and frontier builders, Bie is happily spinning tales about James Jesse Strang, the self-appointed king of Beaver Island, and revealing the true story behind the killing of Dan Devine's dogs. The 30 stories collected herein cover everything from political scandals, assassins, and outlaws to weather disasters. An entertaining read from America's Dairyland.

Read an Excerpt

Jean Nicolet was lost. Really lost. Half-a-world lost.
Wearing a full length silk robe with a colorful bird and flower print and firing pistols to announce his arrival, at least Nicolet looked good when he stepped out of his canoe to ask for directions that summer day in 1634.
The local Winnebago Indians who greeted Nicolet on the shores of Green Bay were perplexed of course, as most people are by the French, but they welcomed the stranger nevertheless and served him dinner, which is always better than being served as dinner.
It wasn’t easy discovering a new world.
