Library Journal
★
Jonathan Redmond knows Thomasina de Ballesteros is trouble and not just because of the knife that gleams in her hand as she hovers in the shadows outside the Duke of Greyfolk’s window. Beautiful, intriguing, and as tempting—and complicated—as sin, Tommy has an agenda of her own, and the last thing Jonathan needs is to be drawn into her dangerous plans—or her arms. If only he could resist! A nobleman’s natural daughter in search of belonging and a youngest son hero who’s tired of being dismissed by his father find friendship, purpose, and love in this remarkable story that tackles serious social issues with a combination of sharp, witty dialog, delightful humor, and a much-talked-about deck of cards.

Verdict Poignant, funny, and heartbreakingly triumphant, this captivating romance from Long (A Notorious Countess Confesses) is exceptional in every way; not to be missed.—Kristin Ramsdell, Libn. Emerita, California State Univ., East Bay

Julie Anne Long doesn't disappoint in this lovely edition to the Redmond series.  The humor always adds so
much to her stories. The romance is delightful, the history of child labor in England is educational. Thanks for
a wonderful read.  Can't wait to read Lyon's story in the future.

    Tommy, you won me over

A novel set in 1827 with a Bastard-born heroine named Tommy? What was I thinking? Well, here's the skinny. This is easily the best of Julie Anne's Pennyroyal Green series. You need not read the other books in this series to like this one. Jonathan Redmond is at his last bit of patience with the overbearing Father we have all grown to hate over the past 3 books in which he slithered into the story. Really, Isaiah, you should Get a Grip. ALL of your offspring (except Lyon) have married Bastards just to get back at you. Jonathan really really means well, but you've pushed him too far. In your zeal to control his life, you failed to notice that he's the smartest child, and has become more astute than you. Did I mention that you made him hate you with your latest edict? Oh, Jonathan, your revenge is so sweet. And you get to live happily ever after with the amazing Thomasina! In case a reader gets the idea that Jonathan is the main character in this book, I must mention that Tommy gets equal time, only her challenges are more stomach-churning than Jonathan's. Tommy and Jonathan are "forced" to work together to overcome her hurdles. Swoon me, they work together so well. Read this book. Laugh a lot, and sigh at the end. Then read it again. It's that brilliant.

Very good book. Long makes you feel the emotions of the characters. This whole series is great, but this is one of my favorites. Thanks for showing a hero that is not perfect...but one that strives to be a better man and not just for a woman...he does it simply because it is the right thing to do.

    Loved it! (LVR)

I've found that few authors can sustain their momentum in a series this lengthy and involved. But Ms. Long has me hooked. She's produced another great story of love, redemption and family dynamics. Bring on the next one!

    Five stars

Last reviewer mismarked the stars.. I agree this is Long at her best. She is just brilliant at characterization. I never thought I would love Jonathan. He seemed so silly and vain in the other books . And he is vain here too but Julia makes us love him for it. This is a kind of Cinderella story. It's delightful and satisfying.
