Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Last year, when talking to parents was still cool, my daughter's third grade friends asked me to sign their yearbooks. They were all delighted at the "new" funny inscriptions I wrote. You know, like, "2 Good 2 Be 4 gotten." Well, if I were the only one to have this book, I could REALLY impress them this year, but it's too good not to share. This is a perfect end of the school year gift, just in time for all those yearbooks that need to be signed. Children can write, "There are golden ships, There are silver ships, But the best ship Is Friendship." They will have a great time looking through this book finding fun, warm, loving and yes, rude ways to sign their friends' yearbooks. Christy Hale's illustrations make flipping through this compilation even more enjoyable. For example, there is an illustration of two girls hugging each other on the prow of the "friend" ship. Another illustration shows a kitchen sink slowly going down into a sea lit by a sunset sky (you know, "yours till the kitchen sinks"). This book is populated by a wonderfully diverse population too, which is something many books try to do, but not all succeed. 2003, August House, and Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Morrison has created a stunning collection of autograph verses, drawing on material in Best Wishes, Amen (1974) and Yours Till Niagara Falls (1990, both HarperCollins) and on newly collected material. Hale's ink-and-watercolor paintings dance across each page, extending the sentiment (humor, sweetness, nostalgia, insult) implicit in each verse. For example, a knight with a frying pan stands under Humpty Dumpty ("All the king's horses and all the king's men/Had scrambled eggs for breakfast again"); two girls whisper together on a park bench ("Ashes to ashes,/Dust to dust./You're one friend/That I can trust"). A book to be pored over till "-butter flies," "-ginger snaps," and "-Britney spears."-Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
