Good story, though it loses a star because the Nook version is very
poorly edited (typos everywhere!) and that really annoys me because it
shows that they didn't put the same care into the electronic version as
they did into the final print version, especially when the errors are
the type that any basic word processing software would catch.

I love this series so much that I rushed to get the next book before I reviewed this one. :) For me that's the sign of a great series. The typos can be a bit annoying, but the story and the village are simply awesome. It's rare to have such big laughs in a mystery, which shows just how talented this author is.

I'm not too far into the book yet to say whether its better than 3
stars, but its seems to be entertaining and (finally) gets going around
the end of the third chapter, which I felt like I had to talk myself
into getting to the good part. I'm hoping the rest gets interesting,
and if I may make a suggestion - get to the point faster please. I
usually close a slow moving book in the first couple of chapters. I
understand about setting up characters but the opening of this one seems
long-winded.

I completely enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next book to come out. The magical village and characters are perfect for a relaxing book that will take you to an imaginary village of everyday people who just happen to have magical powers. I looked forward to each time I could settle in with this Darcy and her adventures, and was sad when it was over!

Finally!! A paranormal book that actually defines the rules of the Craft. Clear direction and a well-defined punishment for breaking the rules. Not to mention an engaging heroine who is just learning to manage her heritage. Add a quirky sister, a young witch she is helping to find her place and the half-crafter dad who knows about the magical happening in the quaint village within Salem, MASS. Oh, did I mention the ex-wife of the dad who is a familiar? Keep reading to discover the perks of knowing a rat who's a tailor and a movie-lines-knowing bird. It's a blast!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is one of the first books I have read that I felt good after reading it. I'm looking forward to reading more of Heather Blake's books.

There is so much going on and the characters are just precious. You won't go wrong by giving this book a chance - I can hardly wait to read the next in the series (it comes out in August). The mystery was well done, the pace expertly laid out and I didn't guess the ending; it had it's touching moments as well. If I knew a wishcrafter like the main character in the book my wish would be to live in this charming town;)

I loved this book from the begining. It is a wonderfully descriptive story, full of interesting and unique details. I enjoyed every twist and turn the story took and can't wait for Ms. Blake's next book. I even shed a few joyous tears at the end. If you enjoy a different take on the paranormal genre or even just a great story, I whole-heartedly suggest this book!

I really enjoyed this book. If you like "cozy", "whimsical" mysteries this is great! I usually know who the "perp" is early on in most books. This one kept me guessing throughout. The Enchanted Village and it's characters are a whole new concept, for me, and if you are enamoured with the Crafts it's a fun book. I can't wait for the next book to come out.

In Blake's mystery novel, Darcy and Harper Merriweather are sisters that hail from a long line of witches from Salem, Massachussetts. Both were working dead-end jobs when their Aunt Ve informed them that they were both WishCrafters--witches capable of granting wishes. Eager for new starts, the sisters join their aunt in her magic themed hometown to hone their new skills. But when a wannabee witch is found murdered, fingers point to Aunt Ve's boyfriend prompting both women to try their hand at crime solving. A wonderful blend of magic and murder and a powerful initial installment to The Wishcraft Mystery series.

If you enjoy paranormal mysteries, you will enjoy this book. I kind of liked how each witch as a specialty. As the title implies, the protagonist is a witch whose ability is to grant wishes (there are several caveats to the wishes). I enjoyed this book and think that fans of this genre will like it as well.

Heather also writes under the name of Heather Webber. I have read two series by Webber, Nina Quinn and Lucy Valentine. I really liked both of those series. It took me a few pages to get into this book. But It Takes a Witch did grab me and get me involved in Darcy's new life in the Enchanted Village. This is a great start for a series.

An author could easily just change their pen name and have the same style going in the new series, but Heather has two distinct feels for the Wishcraft Mystery series as Ms Blake and the Lucy Valentine Mystery series she writes as Ms Webber.
The mystery is well done and the magic premise is superb. There are a lot of wee rules to follow as a Wishcrafter, like the wish has to be true of heart and phrased exactly so. Darcy is compelled to grant the wish once the rules are followed, sometimes with hilarious results. She's still learning her skills and abilities so mayhem can occur.
And there are all kinds of witches in this town that's not too precious for words as it could have been. I'd love to live here. The herbal, healers, wishcrafters, all sorts of witches hide in plain sight in Enchanted Village area of Salem.
Definitely pre-ordering A WITCH BEFORE DYING, due out 7 Aug 2012.
Five wishcraft beans......
