Overview

Considering the breadth of Plácido Domingo's discography, it's hard to believe this is the first time he's recorded a disc of popular Italian and Neapolitan songs -- a repertoire so many other operatic tenors have mined, all the way back to Enrico Caruso's time. As its title suggests, Italia, ti amo is a love letter to this music, and to Italy itself, and Domingo sings his heart out on each of the 16 songs he's chosen. Don't expect to hear the overdone standards like "O sole mio," however; Domingo has dug deep into the catalogue and come up with a set of passionate melodies that will be fresh for almost every listener. Some of these songs date back to the 1880s (including Gastaldon's "Musica proibita" and Tosti's particularly ardent "Non t'amo più"), while the most recent -- "Quarant'anni," composed by Domingo's own son in 2004 -- is hot off the presses. But through more than a century's worth of music, the almost operatic quality of the tunes and emotions has remained constant, while the pure lyricism of folk music also shines through as well, especially in the Neapolitan canzoni by Ernesto de Curtis ("Tu ca nun chiagne") and Eduardo Di Capua ("I' te vurria vasa'"). Domingo's warm affection and respect for these popular songs is always apparent, and with his magnificent voice -- backed up by a heart-tugging set of new orchestral arrangements -- he expresses their timeless romance as only a great opera singer can do.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - John Steane
Domingo, phenomenal in this as in so much else, in his sixties still has the voice, if not of youth, then of a man in his prime.... He sings with uninhibited emotion but knows when the limits of good taste are reached.
Los Angeles Times - Daniel Cariaga
The veteran 65-year-old star tenor delivers with his signature intensity.
