    Italian Americans

Being an Italian American I really enjoyed this book. I can understand better what my ancestors went through having come through Ellis Island. Also, my family lived on the streets of Little Italy in New York City and I have heard stories of what their lives were like. I found that your book was accurate when I compared it to what my grandparents and great aunts have told me.

Good source of history on first-generation Italian-American life in the US

I purchased this book as a gift for two third generation Italian-Americans (my children). I read the book myself, and I learned about the history of Italy before the family members arrived to this country from the region of Calabria, Italy. It read like a middle school history book, dry and not a lot of facts in this early section. It would have been interesting to know more about life in Italy and, more specifically, the regions of Southern Italy where most of the immigrants hailed from. But little detail was not present on that. Most of the information in the book was on life once the immigrants arrived in the U.S., and I did find this informative. I remember my great-grandma-in-law's stories about coming to the U.S. via Ellis Island as a child. I was glad I found this book for my kids to read, and I would also like to see the companion television documentary!
