Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati J.D.
Colorful photos, large print, and child friendly text combine to create a positive impression of the Italian language and culture in this picture book. Simple chapters, such as food, sports, school, and family life are featured in this introduction to Italian for elementary school students. Four or five sentences about each subject are provided along with visually appealing photographs. Readers will note that Italian children play soccer, eat pizza and love their families just as they do here in America. Italian words in the text are italicized and a pronunciation guide to these words is found at the back of the book. The pronunciation guide is easy to use; however, separating it from the words in context is not ideal. Non-native speakers have to work a bit harder with this format. Nevertheless this title, which is one in the publisher's "Languages of the World" series, opens a door to a whole new world. It may just spark a serious interest in the Italian culture and language. An index and places to go for further information are found at the back of the book. Reviewer: Jeanne K. Pettenati, J.D.
