Children's Literature - Bobbie Lowe
Retail Careers is part of a series titled "In the Workplace." This series gives young adults an inside view of how their studies relate to the workforce world. Authors Ensaff and Rooney provide an extensive overview of this wide-ranging career. Each chapter has subtitles and content addressing in real detail each respective subfield. The text is full of small graphics and sidebars full of fun, interesting, and necessary facts about the retail industry. One example is ?Handy Hints' which are fun and attention grabbing. They are insightful and creative. For example, working in a small independent shop can give you a great introduction to all the tasks involved before you set up your own business. You may gain experience in buying, visual merchandising, promotion, stock control, customer service, finance, and other aspects of working in retail. In other small sidebars the authors provide ?Main Tasks' which lists the main components of a specific job in the retail industry. There are also checklists of certain interpersonal traits you should have to be successful in certain retail jobs whether it be a warehouse stock manager or customer service manager. There are also sidebars for help in finding a job. The text is full of pictures and a variety of layouts that make it more reader friendly and the information more accessible. There are interviews with professionals who are currently working in the retail field. In the back of the book there is a further reading section, websites, glossary, and index. A useful set for a school or classroom library. Reviewer: Bobbie Lowe
