Children's Literature - Jeanne K. PettenatiIn this broad overview of Italy and the Italian people there is much useful information about customs, food, education, sports, and culture. However, in several places the text makes blanket generalizations and reinforces stereotypes. For example, "Like other Mediterranean people, .Italians are not very fond of rigid discipline and do not like standing in line and waiting their turn." The book would better serve readers if it did not make such sweeping statements, whether positive or negative. The photos, which are colorful and varied, succeed in showing readers a slice of Italian life. Charts illustrating facts about the land, economy, and home life are interspersed.
