Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This little 8" square book is about Diego, a character from the children's' television show, Go, Diego, Go. There are five double-page spreads in the book; the last one has a nice big pop-up and the other four have interesting pull tabs. The story involves Diego who has reduced himself to the size of an insect so he can see his friend Benito, a beetle, participate in a dance contest. But Bonito's partner for the dance, Betty, is missing. A friendly butterfly helps Diego look for Betty, but when they find her she has hurt her wing so she is unable to fly to the contest, and now it has started to rain! A kindly flower opens to become her umbrella, but when they reach a muddy path they are too small to cross it. Fortunately a regular size jaguar comes along and gives them a ride back to Benito and the dance contest. Diego cheers the dancers on. Because these particular television characters are always introducing their listeners to the Spanish language, Diego says words such as !Hola! and !Fantastico!, and he says "climb, climb!" !sube! sube! and amigo and gracias. It will be easy for young readers to understand these words when they read them because the meanings in their settings are so obvious. The colors are vivid, the pull tabs are fun— especially the flying butterfly—and Diego is enthusiastic. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
