Overview

When Kimberla Lawson Roby burst onto the literary scene, her fresh, wise, and witty voice grabbed the attention of readers and critics everywhere. Now, with three Blackboard bestsellers to her credit, including the #1 Casting the First Stone, she is back with her most absorbing work yet It's a Thin Line.

Sydney, Gina, and Rick are siblings who have always shared a special bond, and yet their lives are as different as can be. Responsible eldest sister Sydney has everything she's ever wanted-a sexy husband, an adorable daughter, and fulfilling work. But, little by little, the demands of her writing career have mounted, leaving her little time or energy for family life. Meanwhile proud middle sister Gina is struggling to raise her eight-year-old twins-and protect them from the increasing fury of their volatile father. Impulsive brother Rick, the baby of the family, is living the high life-dodging commitment with his longtime girlfriend and wondering if the grass is greener somewhere else.

When their beloved mother Delores suffers a debilitating stroke, all three suddenly find the tenuous threads of their individual lives at a breaking point. A dark childhood secret threatens Sydney's secure world; Gina is swept into a maelstrom of domestic violence; and Rick comes to a dramatic crossroads in his relationship with his girlfriend.

Worst of all, the burden of caring for a parent is tearing the siblings apart, shattering their faith in one another. Now, as Sydney, Gina, and Rick struggle to overcome daunting obstacles and rebuild their lives, they will discover something they've never let themselves believe: that their most stable-and most cherished-relationships have always been with each other.

Once again, Kimberla Lawson Roby has woven a compelling saga that could come only from a genuine storyteller. Alternating between moments of poignancy and humor; filled with complex and recognizable characters, It's a Thin Line is sure to delight her faithful readers, and win countless new fans.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The story of the private heartaches of three Chicago siblings before and after their mother's debilitating stroke drives this amiable family-and-faith-centered novel by Roby (Casting the First Stone). At 36, Sydney Taylor attempts to be dutiful daughter, eldest sister, loving wife, apprentice freelance journalist and pragmatic mother to a teenager. This general overcommitment has a dire effect on her sex life, causing caring husband Wesley's patience to wear thin. Middle sister Gina balances her top-level job, her twin girls and her jealous husband's physical and mental abuse, which finally proves too much for her to handle. The sisters' young brother, Rick, enjoys his job and his live-in fianc e, but her desire to set a wedding date and his fear of commitment are issues they must address. When the siblings' mother, Delores, suffers a stroke during her retirement party, all of their personal problems are put on hold. Delores undergoes surgery for a brain tumor and moves in with Sydney while she recovers. To Sydney, who's also dealing with a hefty secret relating to her sexual problems, it seems that she is caring for her mother alone, while her sister and brother return to their cloistered lives. But Sydney doesn't realize that Gina has resolved to take justice into her own hands and punish her brutal husband, and Rick is struggling to make a dramatic, life-altering decision about his relationship. More texture in the prose would take Roby's writing up a notch or two, but as it stands, this is an easy, satisfying beach read. Agent, Elaine Koster. (May) Forecast: Roby, a Blackboard bestselling author, won't expand her audience much with her latest, but fans will respond to her tried-and-true formula. 10-city author tour. THIS BOOK WAS OKAY. THE TOPICS SHE TOCHED WERE VERY GOOD. BUT IT WAS KIND OF BORING TO ME.

Another important point about this book is that it is well written. I could easily follow it. The pace of the story is fast and the characters are so real that I could easily relate to them.

I was expecting much more from this book. I guess I was misled because I was advised this was Part 2 to Casting the 1st Stone. But nonetheless, this was still a good book. I was glad that Gina ended it w/Phillip and stopped the abuse. The topics that Sydney discussed about her childhood were also informative. Great Book

An important point about this book is that it is well written. I could easily follow it. The pace of the story is fast and the characters are so real that I could easily relate to them. Now, I have made up my mind to read the other books by this author. There are issues in the book that people are faced with in their everyday lives. From this book one can find ways to have meaningful discussions on all interconnected issues. You will not regret reading this book.Recommended stories are SWEET SAME GIRLS, THE USURPER AND OTHERS, WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS, in the sense that they go to add to this rich theme.

This book was excellent! I could not put the book down. This is the first book that I ever read that kept me reading until I was done, every moment I got I read. I don't read that often, so this was shocking to me. Roby has definetely become one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait to read 'Casting the First Stone.' No doubt this is a MUST READ!

Kimberla Roby is a very good writer. I love to read her books. You just can't put her books down, they are such a great read, from one page to the next. I just purchased her new book,'A Taste of Reality'. I know it is going to be a great read also. Keep up the good work Ms. Roby.

This book was truly a page turner. The novel demonstrates the cliche, 'it's a thin line between love and hate', to the fullest. It illustrated a family's love and struggles. No matter what the obstacles are, you can always depend on family. I have recommended this book to others.

This book was dramatic but real. A Thin Line deals with spousal abuse and caring for an ailing parent in such a real way, you feel as if you're right there in the midst. I have read one of her other books (Casting the First Stone) and I have another one to read later and I can say I enjoy her. GET THIS BOOK. You will not be disappointed...

this a a book that really hit home with me personally, because me and my mother are very close just like sydney and her mother was. i loved this book for so many reasons, because with everything that was going with the family member sydney still managed to to the strong backbone of the family, and there was plenty of drama going on with all of her sibilings. her sister gina was in an abusive marriage, her brother was going through his drama with his girlfriend, and a host of other things, but sydney hung in there like a champ until the death of there mother, but i belive that this bought them closer together.

This was her best work yet. The dynamics of the siblings and the relationship with their mother was gripping and very heart warming. The author did a great job giving enough detail into each character's life to paint a vivid picture of their world. Great job and I look forward to the next one.

This is another 'Can't put down book. This book let's you know that a woman has to do what a woman has to do. Some situations you just have to get out of.

This work is not only excellent in the storyline and development of the characters, it opens your eyes to the hidden taboo of domestic violence and how it affects every aspect of the lives it touches. Alhtough other means could have been used to leave the abuser, this story shows that there is usually one 'out', if only in the mind of the abused.

I loved this book. Once again, Ms Roby have done it again. I received this book as a gift and I must say that I could not put it down. I finished the book in a day and a half. I loved the character Samatha... I loved her determination and drive when it came to her making Rick decide on the relationship. 5 finger snap to this book!!!!

This book was DA BOMB!! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could relate to all the characters and the story line. People deal with these type of issues in life on the daily basis. Gina YOU GO GIRL!!, Sydney, I feel you. I'm the strong one in my family (the dependent one) and Rick, thanks for waking up my brotha. I was a little afraid for a moment there. Keep up the good work Kimberla. I recommend this book to all!!
