Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The popular Jesse Bear ( Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? and Better Not Get Wet, Jesse Bear ) returns in this collection of rhythmic verses. Sunny, insouciant and lovable, Jesse Bear is an endearing character with whom preschoolers can easily identify. The uneven rhymes focus on Jesse Bear's activities throughout the day. He squishes in a ``muddle-puddle,'' plays his drum as he watches the goldfish ``Dance through the water / To the Goldfish Beat'' and spills his Cubby Crunchies all over the table to get the prize. From morning, when Jesse Bear in his Superbear cape pounces on his sleeping parents, to the end of the day, when he asks for ``One more story / One more rhyme / One more kiss / And now, it's time! / Good-night,'' Jesse Bear's energy, like that of many toddlers, is astounding. Ages 3-6. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
The irrepressible Jesse Bear is back and this time in paperback! He rhymes his way with predictable toddler nonchalance through all the major events in his day. He eats Cubby Crunchies for breakfast ..."with milk and honey / what a treat!" He builds with cardboard boxes ... "boxes are the best for Jesse Bear!" And he almost goes to sleep, but not without "One more story / One more rhyme / One more kiss / And now, it's time!" Carlstrom and Degen know how to let Jesse Bear entertain readers. And he does just that here with bouncy rhythms, age-appropriate poem topics, and artwork that leaps off the page and into the hearts of readers both young and old. 1998 (orig.
School Library Journal
PreS-K-- Jesse Bear is a little boy in fur with the behavior patterns of a preschooler. He likes to jump in his parents' bed to wake them, pour out all the cereal to find the prize, slosh in mud and water, present Mama with a slightly bent flower, prolong bedtime rituals, and participate in other activities dear to the hearts of middle-class children. All this takes place in a delightfully comfortable home full of toys, food, and family love and in a flowery outdoors. Jesse is typically mischievous, messy, and demanding, and his plump, affectionate mother and father are reassuringly patient and understanding. His adventures are described in simple poems that use repetition, emphasis, active verbs, onomatopoeia, short lines, cheery rhythms, and vivid language. They read aloud very well. The exuberant, amusing ink-and-watercolor illustrations are mostly double-page spreads with the pictures and poems framed together in eye-appealing unity. The family has an idealized, Teddy bear quality, and is portrayed in softly bright colors against a lushly detailed background of countryside and home, with a bedroom any little boy would love. Children are sure to enjoy these lively verses and the pictures of Jesse Bear's very pleasant life. --Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
