Overview

Vicky Tiel started as an “it” girl of the 1960s and has had a four decade career designing clothes that make real women look fabulous.  Her sexy, fresh hot pants and miniskirts were used by Woody Allen in his first movie, What’s New, Pussycat?, her classic design inspired the red dress that transformed Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, and her creations are worn today by stars such as Halle Berry and Kim Kardashian.  Tiel’s own life has been dance-the-night-away fun, from her earliest days flunking out of Parsons to design on her own, to starting a chic boutique with best friend Mia Fonssagrives in Paris, from marrying MGM’s top make-up man to becoming Elizabeth Taylor’s dear friend and part of her longtime entourage.  Tiel forged her own path, and picked up some distinctive and hard-earned lessons from the rich, famous and celebrated along the way.

In IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DRESS, you’ll get a glimpse of what it’s like to be Hollywood royalty (think yachts, tiny dogs, giant pearls and peanut butter sandwiches washed down with Chateau Margaux), discover the seduction secrets of the greats (from Kim Novak to Goldie Hawn to Warren Beatty), take in a little husband-hunting advice, and even learn legendary model Dorian Leigh’s recipe for gigot d’agneau sept heures.

Vicky Tiel will teach you to dress like a sex symbol , cook like the owner of a French country inn, and seize what you want from the world like an American ingénue.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A naughty girl when that was the best a girl could be, inventor of the mini, Paris couturier at 18, Vicky Tiel tells spicy tales from dressing Kim, Ursula and Miles Davis, teasing Woody Allen, staying up late with Princess Grace and more intimate tales than you thought you'd want to know from her years in the entourage of Liz and Dick.  Comes complete with tricks you need: bedroom advice, supermodels' diet guide, how to get men to give jewelry and the recipe for a perfect pink tunafish sandwich."

—Gael Greene, author of Insatiable: Tales from a Life of Delicious Excess.

"A delicious romp...her memoir reads like all of the juiciest bits of your favorite gossip magazine, pushing back the curtains of an over-the-top life among the who's who of the '60s-'80s."

—Kirkus Review

Library Journal
Tiel's breezy memoir oozes a self-confidence that teeters on braggadocio as she takes readers through the highlights of her life as a fashion designer and friend to the stars, beginning in the 1960s. Tiel and her slinky, body-baring clothing designs took Paris and New York by storm (as she will be the first to tell you). Many of her stories would be hard to fact-check—she was part of a clinical trial for birth-control pills, Woody Allen "won" her virginity in a contest, Warren Beatty is a great multitasker. Her claim to have invented the miniskirt would certainly be disputed by Mary Quant and André Courrèges. Tiel isn't coy about her bedroom activities, though her quest to achieve five stars in all categories on a particular actor's chart will rub some readers the wrong way. Her playful line drawings, celebrity "Life Lessons," recipes, and words of wisdom appear throughout. VERDICT A gossipy, name-dropping read, much of which must be taken on faith. Fans of behind-the-scenes Hollywood tell-alls will love it, though Tiel's attitudes about men, drinking, and marital fidelity will not be for everyone.—Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley Sch. Lib., Fort Worth, TX

    Really fun to read!

Wow, Ms Tiel has led one heck of a life! From overnight success in Paris as a fashion designer, then doing the costume designs for a Woody Allen movie, to becoming part of the Taylor-Burton entourage and traveling with them to movie sets all over the world. Lots of great gossip about movie stars, behind the scenes in the fashion world -- all amazing stories, but most of all the memoir of a strong talented woman with a will to succeed, and an unquenchable spirit.

Vicky, I've Been Looking Forward to This!

Vicky Tiel is as much a creation as her clothes and her perfumes. She's an original, a unique, determined, talented woman who has now created a memoir reflective of her style and "telling all" about her extraordinary life. Don't miss this gossipy, spicy, spirited romp about Hollywood royalty and this unpretentious woman who manages to navigate that world with a delightful mix of sophistication and earthiness.

    Loved This Book!!!

Vicky Tiel has lived a very interesting life, that's so very evident in this book about her life and the interesting celeberties she has met and worked with. I could not put this book down, and found myself reading into the wee hours of the morning. I heard about this book and Vicky Tiel through my daughter, who works with a neighbor of Vicky's. The girls in her office were invited to Vicky's first book signing event, and my daughter attended and told me about the book, and so I ordered it right away. I was not sorry, believe me. Vicky has led the glamorous life a lot of us only dream about. Vicky traveled in the same circle with Liz Taylor, who I have adored, growing up in the fifties. Vicky is a gutsy woman, and her book is a great read. I would reccomend this book to everyone.

Not What I Expected, But Delightful

I thought this book would be all about the fashion business and the story behind my favorite fashions of the time. But it's so much more: In the post-Peyton Place time in which Vicki Tiel (and I) came of age, there was a great deal of sexual freedom. I laughed as I read it and thought the title should be It's All About The Undressed. What an exciting life she's had! There are pictures of some of her designs, but maybe best of all are the recipes she shares. I wish many more years to a lady who really knows how to live.

    Highly Recommend This Book!

Once you pick up this book, it's hard to put it down-seriously. The way it's written, you feel like the author's close friend and time flies by as it would if you were talking all afternoon at a cafe.
