Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
Julie Silver, a Boston-born folk singer, has a laid-back voice that's equally at home in Hebrew and English, delivering both in with an easy groove that at times recalls Carly Simon. On the title track to this holiday collection especially, Silver finds an earthy, mellow way to liven up a festival that's not exactly known for stirring songs. Delivering the holiday's one chestnut, "Ma'Oz Tsur / Rock of Ages," Silver turns to some '60s style folk revival, with passionate new lyrics of her own devising that charge listeners to make a difference in the world around them with "a peaceful revolution." "Tired of battles fierce and long, we yearn for resolution." It's a message that's in keeping with Chanukah's revolutionary roots -- and one that's welcome in any season. If there's any doubt as to where Silver's sympathies lie, she ends this uplifting set with a standard from another tradition, "This Little Light of Mine." Delivered in a folksy reggae lilt, it's an engaging sing-along for the whole family, the kind that could start a few traditions on its own.

This is an incredibly solid album with Julie Silver's amazing vocals and Tor Hyams' excellent production. It's so good we listen all year round. We're hoping for a sequel!

    Inspirational......

“It’s Chanukah Time” is simply marvelous – each song weaves threads of rock and folk with musical traditions from around the globe. Collectively, in her distinct, soulful style, Julie forms a tapestry that honors the Jewish celebration of miracles while conveying a very modern sense of hope for peace. Whether familiar with Jewish tradition or, like, me, simply appreciative of Julie’s remarkable artistry, “It’s Chanukah Time” will appeal to all ages, of many backgrounds. Songs like “S’Vivon Sov, Sov, Sov” and “Chanukah Blessings” inspired me to close my eyes while “Ma’oz Tsur/Rock of Ages” and “”Mi Yimalel, Too” compelled me to dance and sing….....

JULIE HAS A SPIRITED AND ALIVE VOICE

This is a must for your chanukah celebration and that of your family and friends. She sings a little bit of country and a little bit of rock. The songs are memorable and upbeat because there is a twist in the melody. This is a great recording and a fabulous addition to your chanukah collection for your home or as a gift which requires no sizing. This is perfect gift for the young and old. This is a warm fuzzy feeling cd.

    Loud love in every note

It is so nice to have a family CD of Chanukah music that we can all listen to and sing to in the car. Both traditional songs like Mao Tsur and the jazzed up Dreidel song works for the kids and adults. Julie Silver once again is able to unite all generations in song. Her smile and loud love is underlying every note and can be heard in each song. Thank you Julie!!

Julie Silver lights up Chanukah time

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Julie's new C.D. The music was creativiely arranged and performed. I loved the variety of musical instruments and varied genre. From a jazz feel to a modern middle eastern approach, Julie keeps her listeners interested and captivated.

All I Want For Christmas Is Chanukah

Bing may bring in Christmas, but Julie Silver shakes and swings Chanukah. My feet were tapping from the first note to the last. Julie’s voice radiates, the songs soar, and the original “It’s Chanukah Time” transcends. This album is lovely, I can’t seem to take it out of the CD player.

A Chanukah CD of the times!

Finally, a Chanukah CD recorded now that doesn't sound like it was recorded 40 years ago. This is exactly where jewish music should be going. Simply fantastic!

More Delicious than My Grandma's Latkes !

This album is long overdue. It's about time that we have a really good Chanukah album. The singing, production, and spirit is superb. My only criticism is that the CD was a little too crunchy even with applesauce and sour cream.

    The Grooviest Holiday CD Ever

When I first heard the blues inspired "Dreidel Song," I was hooked. (I had to check the liner notes to make sure that Bonnie Raitt hadn't converted.) Tradition is a wonderful thing, but I can't thank Miss Silver enough for updating the songs from my favorite holiday. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD for all your friends and family. You'll never observe Chanukah the same way again.

More Delicious than My Grandma's Latkes !

"It's Chanukah Time" is about time! This is what Jewish Music is all about. I bought several copies today, and will give them away as gifts. Why can't there be peace in the Middle East and more cd's like this one. The music, singing, and production is sublime and timely. The only complaint I have is that the CD did not taste so great with applesauce and sour cream.

    Incredible voice and energy

From the moment the music starts on “Dreidle”, one cannot help but start dancing, tapping, spinning! If anyone can totally re-energize a familiar song like “Dreidle”, it is Julie Silver. Keeping some of the familiar lyrics we all know, she infuses them with her own upbeat spin and rock-country beat. It is not hard to imagine children dancing and singing, smiling, and laughing with their parents and grandparents, who may be tempted to dance the “Twist” to this one! Julie’s clear, sweet voice soars on “Ma-oz Tsur”, again, transporting the listener to a new experience with a familiar tune. Julie transforms this one into a joyful, optimistic, musical melody. Julie Silver is a talented artist who touches her listeners with her voice, and inspires them with her spirit. I love this Chanukah CD! Julie has stamped these songs with her own unique style and beautiful voice.

    Everything old is new again!!!

What a treat to hear what Julie does to our "traditional" Chanukah melodies, with her warm rich voice, innovative arrangements, and her significant and sensitive new lyrics. Kol hakavod! Something here for every generation.
