Editorial Reviews

Horn Book
Plenty of Christmas cheer and warmth.
Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Twelve humorous poems, often with a twist at the end, appear in large print in this title. Choosing a Christmas tree, writing a letter to Santa, putting on a Christmas play, sending cards, singing carols, and getting mumps at Christmas are some of the subjects. The poem, "Another Santa Claus" ends, "I see Santas by the dozen, by the millions, by the ton, how strange to see so many, since there can't be more than one." The pictures show Santa at a child's door, in a store, at a lunch counter, on a corner before a store window with Santa in a sleigh, and filling most of the seats of a bus. The ink-drawn, cheery watercolors add to the humor with its darling children, elves, Santa Clauses, families, cat, and dog, carrying out the message of the text. The author was honored in 2007, by being named the first national Children's Poet Laureate. This is part of the "I Can Read!" series at level 3, which means that children should be able to read the poems for themselves . Children will enjoy reading this Christmas present book. K-Gr 3

This newly illustrated title has been repackaged for the "I Can Read" series. The bright, full-color artwork is much more modern and appealing than the earlier edition's static three-color version. It is interesting to compare the work of the same illustrator over the 27 years since the first edition was published; libraries should consider a fresh copy of this collection of poems for newly independent readers.-Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library
