Overview

From USA Today Bestselling Author Julia Kent:

Hot make-out session? Check. With the dreamy obstetrician? Check. While her best friend is in labor? Um...

It's Complicated.

Josie Mendham never meant to have her own (radically different) set of gasps and moans a few doors down from where her best friend, Laura, was giving birth. And stealing away with the obstetrician who was consulting on Laura's case certainly wasn't part of any birth plan.

When Dr. Alex Derjian watched the foursome enter the labor ward he did a doubletake: two dads? That defied biology as he knew it. Even more intriguing was the woman with the birthing mother and the fathers: Josie, the nurse he'd been watching from afar for months. One elevator kiss led to an on-call room soiree and soon he was breaking every romantic rule in his playbook.

Finding his way into her pants wouldn't be hard.

But into her heart? That would be a challenge.

It's Complicated is a standalone novel, but is also the much-awaited book that combines the stories of Laura, Mike, Dylan, Josie, and Madge from the Her Two Billionaires series with Darla, Trevor and Joe from the USA Today Bestseller Random Acts of Crazy, with Alex and Josie at the center of it all.

Romantic Comedy meets New Adult romance in this 130,000 word/450 page novel that asks whether people can get out of their own way and learn that love isn't easy...but it's always worth it

I loved this book. Julia Kent is a favorite author and definitely doesn't disappoint with this one. The book is an enjoyable read. It peels back the layers in a controled, easy-going pace. I enjoyed the characters and the story arch. A great book over all.

    Yikes

First book that I bought that I don't care to finish. I thought I bought a romance novel and spent the first third of the book skimming through medical terms and informtion that was not needed. Felt like it was never....ever...going to get to the point of the main characters. I give 2 stars b\c I have never written a book and I am sure it's hard, but this was a chore to read.

I have loved this series! Now Josie gets her own book! And we get to see what the other characters have been up too!
You have to love a girl who finds a man at her best friends birthing. And not just any man but a hot doctor, that seems to have the hots for her.
Seeing past Josie's defense mechanisms and into her character was the best part of this novel. In the two billionaire series she was the wise cracking friend, now she has depth and a past that shaped her into a strong tough survivor.
As each brick of her defensive wall fell it was an inspiration for other survivors of verbal abuse and/or bad parenting.
I was great full for the reality and real discussion of what families and patients with Alzheimer's deal with and struggle against. This topic was handled very compassionately.
I hope Ms. Kent continues to build this Boston/Cambridge world full of fun and interesting characters. Very well written!

***I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for this honest review***

I deeply enjoyed this book from cover to cover.  Literally - because, I even adore the cover.  I never comment on them, but in this case, it is really warranted because it was clever, sweet and different - just like the book itself.

Julia Kent is one of my favorite authors and she provides something different than other romance writers out there.  Her style is very distinctive in that she writes complex authentic and mature characters who feel very current, with storylines that really make you think. And her books are funny, hysterical at points even.  This all comes through strongly in Its Complicated, which gives us the story of Josie and Alex.  Josie was introduced to us in Ms. Kent’s Billionaire Boyfriends series (that one is Hot Hot Hot, by the way) and also in Random Acts of Crazy, which is, Kindles-down, one of my top 5 books of 2013. Josie is a sassy geriatric nurse with a sad past that makes her closed off and fearful of relationships.  Alex is an Obstetric Surgeon and just generally yummy!  Oh and he is also a well thought out character with lots of deep human thoughts, who is tall, dark and delicious!  Alex and Josie have smokin’ hot chemistry, but also real adult issues.  No manufactured drama here, just honest issues and adult growth.  I know, crazy, right?!

This book really is beautiful.  It is long, equivalent of about 450 pages and I was so grateful for that.  I was sad when it was done because I care about all of these characters so much.  The length really allowed for the story to develop organically and never feel forced or rushed.  Another piece of Ms. Kent’s books that I love is her treatment of female friendships.  So many authors treat this as an afterthought or throw away filler, when we all know a woman’s girlfriends are as key a part of her life as her love interests, maybe more so.  Josie’s difficult adjustment to her best friend Laura’s serious relationship and new family is so raw and real.  It actually reminded me of the movie Bridesmaids – and I mean that as the highest compliment – in that it showed through emotion and humor just how hard change and growth can be for women.

You can read this as a standalone novel without having to read the companion novels, but I highly suggest you read the Billionaire Boyfriends series that lead into this book and Random Acts of Crazy.  Together they setup the storyline for Its Complicated and introduce characters that are woven into this book and are just lovely.  Enjoy!

It's Complicated did not disappoint! You should get it! It has the characters from the Billionaire series - Lauren, Mike, Dylan and of course Josie. Add to into the mix Alex who throws a monkey wrench into the mix, especially for Josie, who is normally sarcastic, witty and of course doesn't feel she is worthy of love and feels she is imperfect which makes Alex her "Dr. Perfect". This book is Josie and Alex's love story, it feels so real, as all of Julia Kent's characters do. Throughout this book I laughed out loud, especially at some of the scenes which involved Mike, Lauren and Dylan's baby. I cried when Josie struggled with her feelings which surface after the birth of Lauren's daughter, along with what she feels for Alex and her mother!

I received an ARC copy of this book and I am glad that I did, before reading "It's complicated I recommend that you read her Billionaire series. I enjoyed Julia Kent's Maliciously Obedient and Suspicously Obedient and immediately decided she was an author I would continue to read.

What could be simpler than a nurse and doctor falling in love? Well in this case it's complicated.

While this book can be read as a stand alone novel, it is best read following the Her Two Billionaire's Series and Random Acts of Kindness. It's Complicated is the glue that pulls it all together.

To make love a bit less complicated one must follow the following rules:
    1. Start with a nurse determined to avoid commitments at all cost.
    2. Add in a doctor head over heals for the nurse, and who doesn't know what to do about it.
    3. Throw in two separate menage triads
    4. Create chaos at work and changing careers

Somehow it all comes together to create a beautiful love story. Julia Kent has the ability to take (somewhat) everyday people, put them in the strangest situations, and make us (the reader) fall in love with falling in love all over again.

This is a long book, but well worth the time to read it. Grab your nook, get comfortable, you won't be able to put it down. I can't wait to read what happens next.

    Highly recommend

Julia Kent is a new favorite author of mine! I've loved this series and read them all straight through. Start with the "Her First Billionaire" series and just keep going! These characters are easy to love and hard to leave at the end. The books bring in familiar characters from previous stories, so you need to know everyone! Rumor has it that there is another book in the works and I can't wait.

    Good book.....Lot's of rambling

I loved the series, so I jumped into this book dispite some reviews. It was a great book, but there are many times it just goes into ramble thoughts that last five pages. I caught myself skimming through a lot of those pages, and I don't normally do that. The story line itself though was great.

    Boring and Wordy!

I'm all for a good romance, but I'm on pg 251 and they barely know each others names. Author spent way too long describing every aspect of the friend's birth experience, almost 200 pgs. Excessive with no added content. I'm done with it.

I love how in this book you got more of the quirky, loving relationship of Dylan, Laura & Mike. To see how it all began for Dylan & Mike & now with Laura & their baby girl. It was also great to have Darla, Trevor & Joe make an appearance as well.
But the best part of the book was the real passion of Josie & Alex, aka Dr. Perfect. They are both regular people that have had circumstances in their lives shape who they are.
This book was funny at times, making me laugh out loud & VERY HOT at times. These characters felt real, like you could meet them at work, your neighborhood, or local coffee shop.
I have read all of Julia Kent’s books. And I really enjoy reading her work. It’s Complicated is funny, sensual, & the characters feel real to you. You don’t have to read the Billionaire Series or Random Acts of Crazy before you read It’s Complicated. But you should. You will have a more in depth understanding of all the characters.
I highly recommend Julia Kent’s books!!

Josie, from the author's 'Billionaires' series, is the protagonist in 'It's Complicated'. She's funny, flawed, and smart, which are
adjectives that can describe almost all of Ms. Kent's characters. And that's what I loved about this book.
These 'feel' like real people you'd want to know.

The focus of 'It's Complicated' is the relationship between Josie and Alex. And that story is both hot and, at times, hilarious.
But it's also about how families make us who we are and how we can make the families we both need and deserve.

FYI - I've also purchased the first two in the 'Billionaires' series and 'Random Acts of Crazy', but did not have an opportunity
to read them prior to 'It's Complicated'. Even though you don't need to read the 'Billionaires' books and 'Random Acts' before
    this book, I'd recommend it.

**Note - I received 'It's Complicated' from the author as an Advanced Reader Copy.
