Robin Bowman’s five-year journey into the heart of teenage America created a series of 414 “collaborative portraits,” wherein she shares her discoveries of a generation now coming of age. In searing and intimate photographs, presented alongside the young people’s voices of passion, pride, embarrassment, lust, pain, bewilderment, anxiety, joy, uncertainty, and rage, the book charts the coming of age of the largest generation in America—77 million strong—in every region of the country and every socioeconomic group: from a Texas debutante to teenage gang members in New York City, from a drag queen in Georgia to a coal miner in West Virginia.

Bowman’s intimate photographs ask us to reconcile preconceived ideas and stereotypes of teenagers with the diversity of individuals in the portraits. This book and the traveling exhibition it accompanies are about the inside lives of these kids and how they see their reality in their own voices.

Robin Bowman, a 2005 W. Eugene Smith Memorial fellow, is a photojournalist based in Portland, Maine.

Dr. Robert Coles is the Pulitzer-Prize winning author of the Children of Crisis series and a Harvard emeritus professor of psychiatry.

Meet the Author

Robin Bowman, a 2005 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fellow, is a photojournalist devoted to documenting the poignant social and political issues of our age. A traveling exhibition of the portraits will open at the museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago. Coles' works include the multi-volume The Inner Lives of Children, and the Children of Crisis series for which he won the Pulitzer prize. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1998 by President Clinton.

    Where Has' Leave it To Beaver 'Gone

    This book begins to 'open the doors' to why our teens don't want it opened. If you have a teen who 'morphed' in the last few years, these are the hard fought answers to questions 'why'. The world has changed this author has been able to turn on a flashlight for us- the changes that our teens will allow us to know. What would Anne Frank say if she had lived on! In so doing she creates a map of the American teen state and, a predictive GPS of where they are going. With our heartstrings in tow, what are we facing and what can we do. MRB

    Really Smart

    This is a visually beautiful book that shook up my world reading about just what teenagers are really thinking now.. I guess I had lost touch with myself at that age 'although it wasn't that long ago' but also the world IS a different place now. This book underscores this gap of time and also the intelligence of youth today and their coping techniques.

    Book Captures American Teenagers today

    Robin Bowman has captured the true spirit of the American Teenagers through her haunting photos and insightful interviews. Each young person is a distinct individual and represent all that is America. This is a book for teens, adults, sociologists and people who want to better understand the pulse of America today and into the future.

    The American Teenager-It's Complicated by Robin Bowman appears to be a core sample of depth and breadth both social and geographic. The photographs tell a story. The teens own words add flesh to that story. They all seem to be good folks and that bodes well for our nation.

    It's Complicated is compelling and universal

    Few topics are more consistently engaging and universally thought provoking then analyzing 'coming of age'. What is uniquely compelling about the exceptional photography in 'It's Complicated' is the collaborative nature of the photographer and her subjects. The teenage subjects featured in this collection selected the potrait of themselves that to them best illustrated their individual journey. What is captured is inescapable honesty and photgraphy that is hard to turn away from.

    Simply amazing

    'It's complicated' is an extraordinary look at today's American teenagers who are soon to be America's future leaders, workers, and voters. Robin Bowman through her pictures and interviews has brilliantly captured the most misunderstood segment of our society. Each picture story provides a unique understanding of both the differences in our society but more importantly the similiarities our youth have across cultures. The book shows that regardless of upbringing, most teenagers have similiar thoughts and fears and dreams and that they are not so different or alone. A remarkable book that I highly recommend.

    It's good.

    Beautiful photography. Made me think of Avedon. Loved that the work is collaborative. Teenagers so seldom get such positive treatment and respect. A real learning experience for me and made me feel good about our future. A truly interesting and lovely book. Thank you.
