Children's Literature - Christine Cassello
Over thirty years ago Margaret Hillert wrote a series of stories about a boy with a pet dragon and she has now written a new series. In It's Fall, Dear Dragon, the boy shows his dragon a flock of geese migrating, he rakes up a pile of leaves and they jump and play in them. They go with the boy's mother to the supermarket and pick out a pumpkin to carve for Halloween. His father carves a funny face in the pumpkin as they watch. There is a full moon and the boy and dragon look at it as they get into bed. The boy tells his dragon how good it is for them to have each other as friends. The illustrations are simple and show the action of the story in brilliant color. At the back of the book is a list of words used repeatedly in the story. There is also a section of reading reinforcement exercises written by Shannon Cannon that teach phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and text comprehension in a fun way. Reviewer: Christine Cassello
