Children's Literature - Maria Lamattina EdD.
Looking for a Halloween read-aloud that will keep young children engaged and thinking? If your answer is "yes," then It's Halloween Night! will be a sure win. The book's large text is enhanced by simple illustrations showing a child and a hint of the character the child will be on Halloween on an initial two-page spread. The text, written in the first person, has the child in the picture describing the costume to be worn followed by "I'm a ..." encouraging young children to guess the rest of the statement and become involved in the text. The following two-page spread gives the response in text, surrounded by an illustration of the child in full costume. In addition to a fun first-read, the rhyming and predictable text pattern makes the book a good choice for beginning readers. Teachers may also want to chart the text for choral reading and word family work. It's Halloween Night is a versatile picture book and a positive addition to any primary grade classroom. PreS-K—Five young trick-or-treaters are preparing for Halloween. Two eyes are cut out of a sheet and face paint is applied to a little boy's nose. One costume is complete with the addition of a black cat, another with the application of hair gel and a ketchup drop. Simple rhyming sentences ("It's Halloween night. My costume's just right./With my satin gown and golden crown,/I'm a ...") and colorful, uncluttered illustrations give clues to the costume, but the answer isn't revealed until the page is turned. Children can find stars, spiders, bats, and pumpkins hidden in the backgrounds of each colorful spread. This not-so-scary Halloween book is filled with smiles and treats.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

Looking for a simple title about Halloween for the youngest readers? Rhyming text sets up an interactive guessing game that may just be the treat to share with the toddler and early-preschool set. O'Connell begins, "It's Halloween night and I'll be a fright! With this pointy hat and my spooky cat, I'm a… / WITCH!" Or "I'll dress in all white," or "Watch out, I might bite!" With a couple additional hints plus the flat cartoon visual clues provided by Morris, little ones are sure to shout out the correct answer each time. Children dressed up as a witch, ghost, bear, vampire and princess "run through the gate and can hardly wait. / We ring the bell and then we yell… / ‘TRICK OR TREAT!' " Although the relatively small trim size may prove a challenge at larger storytimes, the bright hues, oversized text and large images relative to the page should easily work for smaller groups. Although this fails to break any new ground, it will likely become a popular choice for debut trick-or-treaters. Get ready for enthusiastic participation, and do not forget to find the small spider placed on each spread. (Picture book. 2-4)
