Ten years have passed, and we meet our heroine, who, it must be said, has never been known as a shy and retiring flower. The scene is the annual Smythe- Smith musicale, about ten minutes before Mr. Mozart begins to rotate in his grave.

"Why do we do this to ourselves?" Hyacinth Bridgerton wondered aloud.

"Because we are good, kind people," her sister-in-law replied, sitting in - God help them - a front-row seat.

"One would think," Hyacinth persisted, regarding the empty chair next to Penelope with the same excitement she might show a sea urchin, "that we would have learned our lesson last year. Or perhaps the year before that. Or maybe even -"

"Hyacinth?" Penelope said.

Hyacinth swung her gaze to Penelope, lifting one brow in question.

"Sit."

Hyacinth sighed. But she sat.

The Smythe-Smith musicale. Thankfully, it came around just once per year, because Hyacinth was quite certain it would take a full twelve months for her ears to recover.

Hyacinth let out another sigh, this one louder than the last. "I'm not entirely certain that I'm either good or kind."

"I'm not certain, either," Penelope said, "but I have decided to have faith in you nevertheless."

"Rather sporting of you," Hyacinth said.

"I thought so."

Hyacinth glanced at her sideways. "Of course you did not have any choice in the matter."

Penelope turned in her seat, her eyes narrowing. "Meaning?"

"Colin refused to accompany you, didn't he?" Hyacinth said with a sly look. Colin was Hyacinth's brother, and he'd married Penelope a year earlier.

Penelope clamped her mouth into a firm line.

"I do love it when I am right," Hyacinth said triumphantly. "Which is fortunate, since I so often am."

Penelope just looked at her. "You do know that you are insufferable."

"Of course." Hyacinth leaned toward Penelope with a devilish smile. "But you love me, anyway, admit it." "I admit nothing until the end of the evening."

"After we have both gone deaf?"

"After we see if you behave yourself."

Hyacinth laughed. "You married into the family. You have to love me. It's a contractual obligation."

"Funny how I don't recall that in the wedding vows."

"Funny," Hyacinth returned, "I remember it perfectly." Penelope looked at her and laughed. "I don't know how you do it, Hyacinth," she said, "but exasperating as you are, you somehow always manage to be charming."

"It's my greatest gift," Hyacinth said demurely.

"Well, you do receive extra points for coming with me tonight," Penelope said, patting her on the hand.

"Of course," Hyacinth replied. "For all my insufferable ways, I am in truth the soul of kindness and amiability." And she'd have to be, she thought, as she watched the scene unfolding on the small, makeshift stage. Another year, another Smythe-Smith musicale. Another opportunity to learn just how many ways one could ruin a perfectly good piece of music. Every year Hyacinth swore she wouldn't attend, then every year she somehow found herself at the event, smiling encouragingly at the four girls on the stage.

"At least last year I got to sit in the back," Hyacinth said.

"Yes, you did," Penelope replied, turning on her with suspicious eyes. "How did you manage that? Felicity, Eloise, and I were all up front."

Hyacinth shrugged. "A well-timed visit to the ladies' retiring room. In fact -"

"Don't you dare try that tonight," Penelope warned. "If you leave me up here by myself ..."

"Don't worry," Hyacinth said with a sigh. "I am here for the duration. But," she added, pointing her finger in what her mother would surely have termed a most unladylike manner, "I want my devotion to you to be duly noted."

"Why is it," Penelope asked, "that I am left with the feeling that you are keeping score of something, and when I least expect it, you will jump out in front of me, demanding a favor?"

Hyacinth looked at her and blinked. "Why would I need to jump?"

"Ah, look," Penelope said, after staring at her sister-in-law as if she were a lunatic, "here comes Lady Danbury." "Mrs. Bridgerton," Lady Danbury said, or rather barked. "Miss Bridgerton."

"Good evening, Lady Danbury," Penelope said to the elderly countess. "We saved you a seat right in front."

Lady D narrowed her eyes and poked Penelope lightly in the ankle with her cane. "Always thinking of others, aren't you?"

"Of course," Penelope demurred. "I wouldn't dream of -"

"Ha," Lady Danbury said.

It was, Hyacinth reflected, the countess's favorite syllable. That and hmmmph.

"Move over, Hyacinth," Lady D ordered. "I'll sit between you."

Hyacinth obediently moved one chair to the left. "We were just pondering our reasons for attending," she said as Lady Danbury settled into her seat. "I for one have come up blank."

"I can't speak for you," Lady D said to Hyacinth, "but she" - at this she jerked her head toward Penelope - "is here for the same reason I am."

"For the music?" Hyacinth queried, perhaps a little too politely.

Lady Danbury turned back to Hyacinth, her face creasing into what might have been a smile. "I've always liked you, Hyacinth Bridgerton."

"I've always liked you, too," Hyacinth replied.

"I expect it is because you come and read to me from time to time," Lady Danbury said.

"Every week," Hyacinth reminded her.

"Time to time, every week ... pfft." Lady Danbury's hand cut a dismissive wave through the air. "It's all the same if you're not making it a daily endeavor."

Hyacinth judged it best not to speak. Lady D would surely find some way to twist her words into a promise to visit every afternoon.

    Fans of the wonderful Bridgerton tales will love this

    In 1815, his father orders Gareth St. Clair to marry Mary Winthrop as the family needs the money from her dowry. He is stunned because Mary may be a year older than him, but no more than just a child in her mind. He refuses so his sire tosses him out while explaining he is not his son as someone else is his biological father. Stunned, Gareth vows to learn the truth about his roots............... Ten years later Gareth finally has a clue, the diary of his Italian grandmother. He asks intelligent linguist Hyacinth Bridgerton to translate it into English for him. As they work together on the translation and interpretation, they fall in love, but someone willing to kill wants to stop them before secrets surface.......................... Fans of the wonderful Bridgerton tales have watched Hyacinth grow up but remain consistent personality wise from her first appearance as a child through the romantic capers of her six siblings until finally her story is told. The seventh and final Regency of this generation siblings is a terrific entry, one of the best if not the best in this strong line as the audience has waited to see who can match up with the brilliant assertive Hyacinth.     I LOVE THIS SERIES!

    I have read many books by Julia and Her brigerton series is my favorite series that she does! This book it yet another one of the wonderful series. Read it you can't go wrong. If you haven't read any of the other books in the series I would highly recommend reading the others first you will enjoy it so much more!

    Not Spectacular, but it was enjoyable. I liked it

    I enjoyed how there was no major conflict in the book. Sometimes I just like to read and I don't always need a crazy villain thrown into the mix. Just a little bit of mischief is good for me.

    Romantic, Heartwarming and a great story..Couldnt put it down..

    I love this series of books by Julia Quinn..They have the balance of intrigue, romance with a little sizzle thrown in. The Characters are so likable and human that I immerse my self in this story and come out with a smile..
    This is a story of a man who is compelled and attracted to a girl for more than her looks..When they kiss there is a tingle, a spark of heat they both feel..the story continues on with these two sneaking out to find a treasure against all of societies boundaries. .
    When the auhtor talks about his kiss I am there and it is exciting..
    isnt that what a good book is for?? I LOVE IT..

    Not as good as other Bridgerton novels

    I rank this one 5th in the Bridgerton series behind 1,2,8,and 6. Hyacinth can be too much at times, and I just didn't feel the romance between hero and heroine in this one as much as the above mentioned novels. Still worth reading, as is the rest of the series.

    Quinn does it right!

    Each of the Bridgertons stories are wonderful. I could not put any of them down, ordered them all in hardback, and will love them forever. My only piece of advice, read them in order...you gain so much more enjoyment and laughter when you do. :)

    Quick, fast-paced, and compelling.

    It's in His Kiss by Julia Quinn Reviewer: Pamela Ackerson (author of Home of the Braves trilogy) Quick, fast-paced, and compelling. Ms Quinn hits the target and again creates another page turner. Excellent story, excellent read, believable characters and you just can't put it down. The Bridgerton series will be one to remember. With imagination and unique style she gives you Hyacinth Bridgerton and her tale, adding charm and intrigue to a character you will not likely forget any time soon. Clear your schedule for this book, plan a quickie dinner and enjoy!

    soooo sweet!

    This book is sweet, that is the only way to describe it. I thought that gareth and hyacinth were perfect for eachother and I loved the adventure in the book along with that wonderful sence of humor that julia quinn is famous for. And as always I loved lady danbury! Great read!

    Shouldn't it be 'It's in His Kisses'?!

    Hyacinth, for most of has probably known her since she was 8 in 'The Duke and I (the first book in the series). Maybe it's that build-up that we have of Hyacinth (at least for me) that makes this installment so disappointing. Sure she's outgoing and brave, but you don't really see that for yourself. Other characters tell you that and it becomes bland because where's the spunky and witty Hyacinth? And then there's Gareth, who of course is handsome, but aha! He's not rich (though he has a title). You'll have to read the book to find out why. Again, do the readers get to see firsthand what a rake Gareth is besides from other characters' gossiping? No, in fact, Gareth seems to be so 'tame' to the point where you'd think Hyacinth is the 2nd woman he's been with. The secondary characters are however, a delight. Lady Danbury (again, readers of Quinn will recognize) seems to be the only one that has anything worthwhile and interesting to say (though Quinn seems to go on and on about it - yes we get the idea that Lady Danbury has spunk). And then there's Gregory, who doesn't make any appearance in the previous books from the time he's grown up (he is off to Eton and all). Anyways, lets just say that Quinn ins't very sublte about it. Gregory makes an appearance that makes you go, 'huh? oh yeah, that's the stereotypical brother who's protective of his sister for one chapter and then disappears for the rest of the book.' Lastly, Violet, Hyacinth's dear mum. Is it just me or does she love rakes? I thought rakes were a 'bad' thing in the ton, especially for chaste, unmarried young women like Hyacinth? Yet, Violet seems to throw her daughter in Gareth's face at every opportunity! Alright and finally the plot. In romance novels, the outcome is predictable (yay! a happy ending!) but it's the journey of arriving towards 'happily-ever-after' that makes these books worthwhile. The plot let's just say is thin and predictable. The italian diary serves to push the two protagonists together, but there's no chemistry or excitement and when the issue of the diary is resolved, you just kinda go, 'well duh Mr. Hero and Ms. Heroine!' Instead, you end up having Hyacinth bugging Gareth 3/4 of the time and personally, his sense of reasoning confuses me, especially in the seduction scene. And by the way, there's something about the title that annoys me. They've obviously kissed more than once and no, Quinn doesn't tell you how special it is or anything, they just kiss and you get the whole, 'oh wow - my heart's afluttering' sorta deal. I just thought the title would play a more significant or sentimental role in the book. I love Julia Quinn (in fact I got into romance books because of her and some other authors), but this truly is not her best. Maybe she was just tired or rushed, but hopefully Gregory (the not so subtle brother and the final installment of the Bridgerton series) will have that same spark we've seen!

    i just can't wait

    i read all the books in order by accident and i just couldnt put them down. she has became my favorite historical romance author. i love how lady danbury does her deviousness on the low. im happy for all the marriages in this series even if it is fictional. i just cant wait for gregory's story. i wonder how she'll attach the ball and chain on the baby bridgerton brother who im sure will try to avoid marriage as well. love it.

    Disappointing

    After reading Julia Quinn's 'When He Was Wicked', I couldn't wait for Quinn's next book. I was so happy seeing 'It's In His Kiss' at the bookstore that I bought it immediately. However I was really disappointed with the storyline. Sure there were witty and funny dialogue in the story however it lacked the special spark that drives one to continue reading the book. The banters between the main characters became boring and tedious. I hope Julia Quinn's next book will keep to the tradition of 'When He Was Wicked'.

    SHE'S BAAAACK!

    AFTER A DISAPPOINTING 'WHEN HE WAS WICKED' I HOPED THIS NEW BOOK WAS IN KEEPING WITH QUINN'S USUAL WONDERFUL WRITING. AND IT WAS!! IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A STEAMY READ YOU WON'T FIND IT-THIS WRITER-ON A SENSUAL SCALE OF 1-10 BARELY EVER BREAKS A SWEAT WITH A 5 AND SO IT IS WITH THIS BOOK. BUT THE ROMANTIC INTERLUDES ARE MORE THAN SUITABLE FOR THE STORYLINE. THIS IS ALSO NOT A RIB TICKLER AS SOME OF HER BOOKS ARE BUT THERE ARE MORE THAN A FEW SMILES FOR ALL. HYACINTH IS NOT YOUR SIMPERING-EYES DOWNCAST FEMALE OF THE TON. GARETH EVOKES SYMPATHY WITHOUT WHINING ABOUT HIS 'SITUATION' TO HYACINTH-HER FAMILY AND THE READER. IT IS NICE TO VISIT WITH THE EXTENDED BRIDGERTON FAMILY AGAIN AND LOOKING FORWARD TO GREGORY'S STORY-THE LAST OF THE BRIDGERTON CHILDREN. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME THE ARTIST'S RENDITION OF THE MAIN COUPLE ACTUALLY FITS THE AUTHOR'S DESCRIPTION-A NICE LITTLE TOUCH I WISH ALL ROMANCE BOOKS WOULD SEE TO. DO NOT--I REPEAT--DO NOT READ THE LAST PAGE OF THIS BOOK FIRST-IT WILL SPOIL THE WHOLE BOOK FOR YOU.

    Outstanding Romance!

    I believe this is Julia Quinn's best book yet. The characters were wonderful and true to themselves. The romance was great, the mystery subplot intriguing and it was a compelling book! A real page-turner! If you've enjoyed her other Bridgerton books you'll love this!

    absolutely, positively wonderful!!!!

    i just got this book yesterday, and i couldn't put it down. in less than five hours of reading, i am already finished. as with any julia quinn book, it captivates readers and pulls you into regency england. it is definitely one of the best of the series and a jewel in all respects.

    Everything you expect is delivered....

    Hyancinth's story is so wonderful! I was so excited when I sat down to read it and I finished it the same night. Julia Quinn has kept her (Hyacinth) true to herself and you will find yourself laughing during most of the book. St. Clair is a great hero, and the only one to compete with Hyacinth...be sure to buy this book!!
