Overview

Canine expert Victoria Stilwell shows readers how to train their dogs out of even the most difficult and persistent bad behaviors. It's Supernanny for your dog!

Victoria Stilwell is one of the world's most recognized and respected dog trainers. As the host of Britain's hit television series It's Me or the Dog and the founder of training schools on both sides of the Atlantic, she is known as much for her spunky attitude as for her caring, effective methods. Now, in her first book, Victoria shows how to tame even the most problematic dog. Simple, intuitive instructions and color photographs help dog owners not merely train their pets, but understand them—so when a new issue arises, they'll be able to adjust their approach and nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand. Throughout, she reminds owners that training isn't about imposing their will on a dog; it's about giving him the tools he needs to live in the human world. Topics include:

  • Think Dog: understanding your pup
  • Talk Dog: canine communication
  • Dog School: basic obedience training
  • Dog's Dinner: the right diet
  • Accidents Will Happen: house-training
  • You'll Never Walk Alone: exercise
  • Worker's Playtime: having fun with your dog

One of the best dog training references

I ordered this book online. At first glance after opening it, I thought this book would be less-than-satisfactory. There's a lot of white space on the pages and there are a lot of pictures. However, after reading the book, I think it's one of the best books for every dog owner to have. Victoria not only describes how to teach your dog certain "commands", she describes how to read and react to dogs' body language, explains the various ingredients in commercial dog food to assit you in chooseing a good food for your dog, and explains how dogs process information. Not only does she tell you how to do something, she gives alternatives and tells you what one should never do to their dog.
I've read other books, but nowhere have I found one book that holds all of the information that this book holds. It really is a must-have for dog owners and dog caregivers.
I enjoy watching Victoria's show "It's Me or the Dog" on the BBC USA and Animal Planet channels. This book is a great printed reference for fans of the show. All of the information and advice in this book has been used time and again on her television program. I give this book the highest rating.

    Very practical

This book has some very practical tips inside. The author obviously knows what she is doing. All of the training is positive, which is such a nice change! She gives step by step instructions on teaching basic commands. I would highly recommend the book and the Animal Planet program by the same name.

    Great Read

Victoria Stilwell really makes dog training so simple and translates dog psychology into a human friendly language. So many things sounded like common sense, but the way she explains the ways dog communicate really makes me second think a lot of things. I really enjoy reading this book and it's something I'll always keep as a reference. She gives a very thorough explanation of dogs from what to feed them and how to train them. Loved it!

    AMAZING

I have a 18 month old Border collie/Austrailan Shepard mix and he is quite a handfull, we started by using her techniques for walking because he is such a puller, and he is easily distracted. With the head collar and redirection he now is great on the leash. The results were almost instantanious. Thank You Victoria!

    Good book

Great reference. If you are a fan of the show, most of the info will be a review. Which is a good thing in my opinion!

    It's Me of the Dog

I thought this book to be very useful. I have picked it up numerous times to check on how to do certain things. I watch Victoria Stilwell's show or tape it and have enjoyed watching it. I am happy to say it is worth buying

This book is a really good dog training book. Not only does it teach how to train a dog using positive reinforcement it also helps you see things from the dog's point of view. I used it successfully to train my adult dog and teach him what I want from him rather than what his old owner taught him so it works well, not just with puppies, but with older dogs too. This is because it teaches all the basic commands exactly as it is easiest for a dog to learn them. Any dog that needs training benefit from this book if you read this book and train your dog by following the books training guide. The book is easiest to understand if you have seen the show, but I think the book is pretty clear and easy to understand even if you haven't

    Highly recommend

Victoria Stilwell is great! This book is more for the beginner and general info, but she really understands dogs and the reasoning behind bad behaviour. Her show "It's Me or the Dog" deals with much more problematic and aggressive dogs and her accomplishments are amazing with long-lasting results. MOST IMPORTANTLY she teaches with patience, consistency, and kindness using humane methods unlike Ceasar Milan. Ceasar doesn't understand dogs at all, can be inhumanely aggressive at times, has short-lived results, and should be banned from TV.

    Completely unnatural method.

A more complete and effective way of learning to be a good dog owner is to take a look at the methods of Caesar Milan. They are more effective and natural.

Helpful, especially is you are a new dog owner...

I am not new to having a dog. I had, however, just gotten a dachshund puppy, and I hadn't had a pupply in 14 years. Since I purchased the book, I now have 3 dachshunds. The book is helpful, but a lot of it can be considered common sense. I bought the book because I like her show and it does contain helpful information. It is not breed specific, so I also purchased a book on dachshunds.
