Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This book attempts to make science appealing by pairing it with magic tricks. The fictional narrator is an amateur youth magician called Tim the Amazing, who offers directions and scientific explanations for each trick as well as tips for staging and showmanship. His helpers, Jessie the Great and Lucinda the Splendiferous, add some girl appeal, and the latter has her own starring role in Chemistry Concoctions: 50 Formulas that Fizz, Foam, Splatter and Ooze! (Sterling, 2005/VOYA review this issue). Most tricks require common household items or supplies easily purchased at a drug store or supermarket, and all materials may be disposed of with the weekly trash or recycling. Some of the tricks are effortlessly accomplished while most require practice, and others require adult help. The tricks are loosely organized, sometimes according to the scientific explanations and sometimes according to the ingredients. The science involved is primarily physics, although chemistry and psychology (perception) make appearances as well, and the explanations are presented in engaging and simple language. The lively watercolor illustrations might limit the audience to younger middle school teens but will not likely deter those with an interest in magic and sleight of hand. Some illustrations do little to clarify the directions and can even be misleading at times, but teens will most likely figure it out after a few tries. This book could be useful in a classroom setting, where teachers or students could perform the tricks as demonstrations of scientific principles. Gr 4-6-Using magic as her theme, Buttitta introduces students to scientific concepts such as air pressure, optical illusions, balance, Bernoulli effect, capillary action, density, temperature, and laws of motions. Each "trick" is one or two pages in length and includes a materials list of basic household items, numbered steps of easy-to-follow instructions, and an explanation of the scientific principles that make the "magic" work. Whimsical color illustrations add humor and elucidate some of the steps. Explanations of scientific principles and the history surrounding some of the discoveries that are used as a basis for these experiments are included. This book provides an effective way to entice students to learn about science. Peter Eldin's Science Magic (Millbrook, 2002) offers fewer experiments, but has the same science-as-magic premise.-Ann Joslin, formerly at Erie County Public Library, PA Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
