Bruce Tulgan has again come through with a clearly presented book--a followup to his "It's Okay to be the Boss" best seller. It is helpful not just to those who have to deal with a sometimes problem boss but for me, as a boss, it points out many ways which I should be dealing better with my employees that I didn't recognize previously. Congratulations, Bruce--well done.

fresh approach

Great advice when you want to work with your boss, not just for your boss, to get real performance, therefore real productivity . . . efficient use of my creativity gets the work well done for both of us minus banging our heads on brick walls.

Just what a volatile workplace needs right now: A breath of rationality, inspiration, and downright practical advice from the man who told managers it was "okay to be the boss." In his latest book, Bruce jumps to the other side of the desk and offers employees real-world tips on how to be productive both with and for their bosses. good nread!

I totally enjoyed this book. Anyone dealing with those in a managerial position will get tons of good advice here to make great production happen for themselves in their job.

Highly Recommended

Bruce is able to state in simple language very powerful and useful managing techniques. As a small business owner, I believe his books have helped me to focus my efforts. This book is a good look from the employees' perspective.

excellent resource

I find Tulgan's work so helpful in clarifying the issues at stake in today's workplace; it goes a long way to relieving anxiety in approaching interaction with personnel - in this case, superiors. I find the strategies suggested specific and to the point - and allow for much less misunderstanding of the goals appropriate to a given workplace situation. Excellent guide to creative management of the professional setting I want to work in and with.

Must read for any manager or employee

This book is a revelation to anyone who manages people for a living. Bruce Tulcan is the master at explaining how to get the most out of employee relations. As with his previous book, this book is a must for those who looking to gain insight in relationships in the work place.

Advice for any worker

In It's Okay to Manage Your Boss, Bruce Tulgan takes the not-very-contrarian position that it's not only supervisors who have to know how to manage. This book articulates the skills, steps, and--most important--attitudes it takes for rank-and-file workers to help their bosses help them.

As Tulgan's subtitle notes, the employee's most important work relationship is with his boss, yet many employees do not do what it takes to make that relationship a good one. Every boss owes every employee clear expectations and priorities, appropriate assessment, and just compensation. But every boss--like every employee--is human, and it is incumbent on the employee, Tulgan argues, to "refuse to be undermanaged."

Tulgan offers copious, practical suggestions on ways to get what you need from your boss--even if your boss is, as Tulgan refreshingly says, "a jerk." But his lessons are not for those who want merely to get their bosses off their backs, and Tulgan's first loyalty is to personal accountability. The way to manage your boss, he says, is to "take responsibility for [your] part of this management relationship." In short, It's Okay to Manage Your Boss is solid advice for anyone not working in a cave.

What a timely book! Bruce writes clearly about complicated subjects. He offers a series of manageable, eminently doable to-do lists for navigating nuanced, dynamic and volatile situations and relationships. This book is extremely well organized and practical, whether in our own scary economic "moment," or in a period of charging growth and full employment. Employee/Employer relationships are a certainty of working life, and it's amazing to me that we haven't had this kind of "manual" for them until now. I've been needing to have a talk with a couple of my bosses, over work expectations and reward for "beyond the job description" contributions. I've been agonizing about it. Now, I have a game plan for opening and conducting those conversations.

Definitely a must-read!

I think that anyone who is struggling with their employer relationship must read this book - the concepts are sound and well-presented. While it may seem "backwards" to manage your boss - think about it - what relationship in the workplace is more essential? so therefore, should you not work at it?

I highly recommend this book.

As a former corporate manager, I now work as a consultant. I face the challenge of new bosses on a regular basis and this book has given me some new tools that will help me be more successful in ever changing environments.

helpful strategies to negotiate for what you need

This book is well worth reading for anyone in the workplace. Really helps with clarity about roles in and the purpose of a work situation. Anyone will benefit by gaining strategies to negotiate for what he/she needs. Offers an alternative to burning out and/or having tantrums.

Resolving "undermanagement" issues require hands-on techniques

Managing up does not come naturally. Tulgan's new book promises and delivers in its hands-on "step-by-step" approach. Like most successful business people, I've attended dozens of seminars and read hundreds of business related books. So often we are left with that nagging feeling of uncertainty as to "what do I do next?" In this dynamic and insecure economic environment, it's refreshing to have a step-by-step process to maintaining clear-cut goals and expectations, maximizing resources (yours and your managers), receiving appropriate feedback and garnering the rewards for your successes in a business environment that's wringing more and more out of each of us (from the top down). Working more effectively with managers requires taking a modicum of control and Tulgan provides techniques for symbiotically and systematically achieving a high level of performance through this relationship.

Attentive to complex interrelationships between employee and bosses, when they both actually have the same goal of getting direct results -- so shelve the wrong turns and distractions to effectively get the job done and keep productivity ramping up.

Another winner

Just received the followup to Bruce Tulgan's "It's Okay to be the Boss."
"It's Okay to Manage Your Boss" is a whizzbang clearly written book that is just as valuable for those folks who are in situations that could easily be disruptive but now can be addressed smoothly. It should be a must read for both "bossess" and those who report to them.
