Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-- A wonderful book for parents or teachers of the very young. In 56 large, clear, pleasantly illustrated pages, Pooley offers activity ideas that will appeal to preschoolers. Short poems, easy recipes for snacks, and even a board game combine to make this a surefire hit among young audiences. Each thematic unit (rhyme, story, and craft or food) is a cohesive whole that should provide a springboard for discussion and further exploration. In the quirky illustrations, both girls and boys cook, and boys do laundry. Everyone joins in the crafts and helps present ``The Froggy Prince,'' a play based on a story told in previous pages. The pictures are full of life and motion, and the children in them seem to dance off the pages. Although there is nothing new here, it is put together beautifully. --Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WA
Kathryn Broderick
Pooley envisions rainy days spent indoors as time for structured play, and in this useful collection of poetry and story-based activities she includes much more than rain poems ("It's Raining, It's Pouring") and rain songs ("Singing in the Rain" and "Over the Rainbow"). In one typical segment, a retelling of "The Gingerbread Man" is followed by the recipe for "little people cookies"; in another, the story "The Three Bears" precedes instructions for making teddy bear masks and "toasted cheese bears." Children at different developmental levels can participate in the themed activities, which require such skills as tracing, cutting, cooking, finger painting, or banging on a drum. Her spot illustrations on white backgrounds lend an uncluttered look to the pages, and one double-page spread even becomes a game board for a game based on the adventures of Brer Anansi.
