All Music Guide - Dave Thompson
It's Right Here for You is the sound of Alex Welsh & His Band at, arguably, the peak of their inventiveness. Recorded during September and October 1960, and reissued as a result of Lake Records' continuing excavation of the Denis Preston/Record Supervision Ltd catalog, It's Right Here for You continues that producer's proud tradition of, essentially, repelling all musical borders. Increasingly, there was a feeling afoot that trad jazz had seen the last of its day, and was about to be swept away by all the other musical movements percolating around the U.K. club scene including blues, R&B, folk and beat. The best that most acts could hope for was to prolong their demise for just a little bit longer, and trust in luck to chase the storm clouds away. It's Right Here for You, however, takes the battle to the foe, a tight and confident brew that doesn't give an inch of ground to any of the upstarts who were hammering at the doors. Highlights are plentiful, but the clarinet-driven "Tansy" and "Nuages" featuring Joseph Reinhardt brother of Django, are essential Welsh, while there's also an airing of the rare 45 rpm version of "Montmartre," to lead us into the bonus tracks -- all four cuts from the 1962 Herr Lennie Hastings EP. A riotously funny novelty assault on all things German Welsh himself is described as Alexbaum Welshbach, and credited with "musical degradation", the EP captured one of the highlights of the band's live show and, though the PC police certainly will not approve, there remains something unerringly comical about hearing Englishmen sing in cod-German accents.
