Children's LiteratureEvery March 17th is St. Patrick's Day and for this reviewer it is special indeed, because it is also my birthday. All the trappings of what has become a pretty big day for fun in the U.S. are described (for young readers—so no green beer). The kids dress up wearing green and in this case they look a little bit like leprechauns. They hunt for four leaf clovers, dance an Irish jig and even have some Irish stew. The drink green juice and listen to some Irish music, sing songs, parade around and just generally have a good time. The little lass has bright red hair and a very jaunty manner. The text is fairly simple and not particularly exciting although the illustrations show plenty of activity and enthusiasm and are much stronger than the text. There is really nothing outstanding about this offering—it is just a pleasant early reader with a focus on a special holiday. A "Scholastic Reader" Level 1. 2004, Cartwheel/Scholastic, Ages 4 to 6.
