Michael W. Smith has seen with clarity the spriritual poverty and emotional numbness of teens who are out of touch with God's love. He writes, 'Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten what the real world was like. But something was starting to break inside of me. God began to renew a heart of compassion for the lost. From then on, I decided that if God was opening a door for me, I wasn't going to waste any time making up my mind about entering it.'

VOYA - Heidi Borton
For more than a decade Smith as been an influential and popular Christian singer/songwriter. His transparent honesty speaks powerfully to all who desire to live the Christian life. Like many of his young listeners who struggle with low self-esteem, lack of direction, drug or alcohol problems, "Smitty" has struggled in his own life and has experienced God's power in reversing his destructive behavior. This book is an aptly expressed and appealing description of God's love for people and the necessity of living according to His purposes and ways as expressed in the Bible. As Smith says. "It's time to be bold by living the life that God offers us through His Son, Jesus Christ." The author places himself firmly on the side of Biblical orthodoxy and scriptural inerrancy but also encourages those who may have trouble believing to give the Bible a chance to change their lives and minds. He unhesitatingly affirms that the Bible, not his own or anyone else's advice, has the answers to all of life's most important questions, whether they be about living harmoniously with others, growing through suffering, or resisting the temptation to live a self-centered and insular life. Stories of Smith's own life and the lives of other young people are interwoven. When talking about the importance of family, he refers to his own commitments (and shortcomings) in family life. When talking about the importance of friendship, he refers to his own church, where both ministry to the homeless and small group gatherings are a part of his life. The stories behind his songs also lend interest since they reflect his own journey of faith. A healing from depression inspired I'll Lead You Home. Friendship with a girl who had lost her sister in an auto accident led to the writing of the heaven-affirming I Hear Leesha. Though the ideas in this book are not new, they are expressed with winsome and thoughtful faith. Smith is that rare and powerful witness who is able to communicate an essential ingredient to successful living: hope. Source Notes. VOYA Codes: 5Q 4P J S (Hard to imagine it being any better written, Broad general YA appeal, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
