Overview

It's time to sleep, it's time to sleep,

the fishes croon in waters deep.

The songbirds sing in trees above,

"It's time to sleep, my love, my love."

As children prepare for bed, the world around them is also settling down for the night. Animals who live in the jungle, the forest, the sea—all whisper to their babies a soft refrain: It’s time to sleep, my love.

As comforting as a soft blanket and warm as a goodnight hug, Eric Metaxas's lullaby is lovingly brought to life by bestselling artist Nancy Tillman  (On the Night You Were Born) , whose illustrations celebrate the wonders of the natural world, and the bonds of family.

It's Time to Sleep, My Love is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
As children nestle down to sleep, much of the natural world around us is also settling down for the night. This soft picture-book call to slumber serves as a reassuring bedtime hug for any "just one more story" coaxer. Nancy Tillman's comforting animal illustrations and Eric Mataxas' gentle lullaby set just the right tone.
From the Publisher
Praise for It’s Time to Sleep, My Love:

“As in On the Night You Were Born, the words directly address a young listener with comforting, fanciful imagery . . . Culminating in a final scene of a sleeping child in a floating bed under a watchful moon, this gentle, tender offering will buoy children with its strong messages of safety and love.”—Booklist

“A luxuriant bedtime retreat for children and parents alike.”—Kirkus Reviews

Praise for On the Night You Were Born:

“This is one of those rare baby books that make both skeptics and sentimentalists of all ages happy.”—Publishers Weekly

“A beautiful tribute to the uniqueness of every child.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Many parents will welcome this opportunity to tell their children how special and loved they are.”—Booklist

“Rhyming text extols and celebrates the uniqueness of a newborn.”—School Library Journal

PreS-K

Beyond the soothing titular refrain repeated throughout, troubles cripple this ode to bedtime ritual. Without strict stylistic technique, the verse is unnecessarily redundant, and cumbersome phrases such as "And as you dream inside your sleep" will trip up readers. Adults will surely have to explain the lines "Your dreams will be arriving soon./They'll float to you/in sleep's balloon./They'll be here when I snuff the wick,/you'd better close your eyelids quick." The book's design clearly favors Tillman's richly hued digital and mixed-media composite paintings over the text. Though fans of Tillman's On the Night You Were Born (Feiwel & Friends, 2006) will likely gravitate to this title, general readers will do better to look to other books for their evening routine.-Bethany Isaacson, Wheaton Regional Library, Silver Spring, MD

Kirkus Reviews

With a rhythm similar to Mem Fox's Time for Bed (1993), fishes croon, a turtledove coos, an otter utters and other animals otherwise sing bedtime praises to a tired little girl. What sets this lullaby apart are Tillman's dramatic, digitally created illustrations, enhanced with chalk, watercolor and pencil. As in her recent On the Night You Were Born (2007), a menagerie of wildlife appears, from a crouching frog in a foggy pond to a mother and a baby tiger wrapped in flowering jungle vines, all preparing for sleep against detailed, luminescent backgrounds. When the text reaches the refrain, "So, go to sleep, my love," the little girl is carried or nestled by panda, swan or reindeer. And just as the girl finally reaches sleep, the cast of creatures arrive by foot and hot-air balloon to bring her dreams to her. Readers of Tillman's previous title will also recognize the reappearance of the glistening moon, this time at the quarter, which blows sparkles of light across the evening sky. A luxuriant bedtime retreat for children and parents alike. (Picture book. 3-5)

I know I've raved about the Kohl's Cares program in the past, so today I will try to contain myself. Still, a beautiful, hardbound book for $5, and the proceeds go to a cause that helps children -- what's not to love?
Even though there were four titles available the day I went to Kohl's, I settled for two and bought the plush animals that went with both titles. When I flipped through It's Time to Sleep, My Love, I fell in love with the tiger illustration: It is breathtakingly beautiful. My son wanted a panda bear, and since the panda bear went with the book, this book was an easy choice.
All the illustrations in the book are stunning. The writing is broken down so there are only a few lines of text per illustration; therefore, more stunning illustration. The text originally was a song, so naturally it reads like a well-rhythmed poem. The writing is good, but honestly I don't think you buy this book for the writing. You buy it for the spectacular artwork. And the panda. And to benefit children.

    Very highly recommended

This book has the loveliest illustrations I have seen in a book of this type. It also has a very sweet message and includes a variety of animals that can stimulate a child's imagination. I recommend this book to any parent or person who truly loves a child.

    Soothing Text, Gorgeous Illustrations

It's Time to Sleep, My Love, is a gentle bedtime story perfect for lulling little ones to sleep. Simple, rhyming text creates a picture of nighttime stillness as animals grow weary and settle down to go to sleep. The illustrations are gorgeous and very imaginative. They have an almost ethereal quality. My personal favorite is one of a moose, panda, tiger, giraffe, and deer in a hot-air balloon looking down on a sleeping village. The use of color and light is just amazing.

It's Time to Sleep, My Love, is a wonderful book to share with little ones to help create a restful mood and to let them know how much you love them. I highly recommend it.

    Wonderful "lullaby" book

This book is so precious, and has such wonderful illustrations that I am buying several to add to baby shower gifts in the future. I have already given one to my daughter for her little one and they love the pictures and the sleepy-time story.

The story has been put to music by Sally Taylor, so some might be able to sing this book to their children at night.

    Wonderful and wonderous!

My son loves this book. And so do I. He can't go to bed without it. At 18 months he's still a bit young for the text, but loves going through the pages naming and counting the animals on each page. The illustrations are amazing--simultaneously photographic and completely fantastical--and absolutely radiant. I haven't seen anything else like them. They have a dream-like quality that makes them very appropriate to a bedtime book. The text is a simple, lovely poem. I think this book will stay on his list of favorites for a long time.
