Topics covered in the book include "Apache Coming-of-Age Ceremony," "Walking with the Goddess," "Sixteen Candles," "It's Your Party," and more. Also featured are photographs and an introduction from 14-year-old Nora Coon, contributing author and editor of the book, and a chapter on creating a customized coming-of-age ceremony.

Editorial Reviews

Colorado Women's News
This is the book I wish I had as a teenager! It's Your Rite: Girls' Coming of Age Stories offers first-hand accounts of a girl's coming-ofage written by other girls. Contributing teen authors from across the country explore their own personal life-altering events and convey them in ways other teens will appreciate and relate to. Chapters cover everything from getting that first bra to coming-of-age ceremonies such as the Quinceanera to more unexpected passages into adulthood such as surviving life-threatening cancer. In sitting down with this book, girls of all ages will find camaraderie, insight and inspiration and more than a few smiles to help them deal with their own evolutionary trip from childhood to adulthood.

Written by teens themselves, It's Your Rite: Girls' Coming-of-Age Stories, compiled by Nora Coon, examines the many experiences girls share as they move into young womanhood. Beginning with "The Bra" and including "Cupid's Arrows in My Back" and "PMS and Other Girl Things," girls ages 11 to 19 share their own coming-of age stories with honesty and insight. "Rites of passage are what this book is all about," according to the introduction. Stories from a variety of cultures around the country tell the sweet, funny or often sad tales of coming of age in contemporary America. Girls from 11 to 16 share their stories in their own words, whether it be about first love, moving or an Amish girl who abandons her culture. They are just right for reading aloud as a group or alone, and provide numerous issues for discussion. There is a black-and-white photo of each author as well as occasional action shots throughout. A section at the end suggests ideas for celebrating your own coming of age. 2003, Beyond Words Publishing,

Gr 6 Up-Written by young women from around the country, this collection of essays covers many different rituals, ceremonies, and milestones associated with the coming-of-age experience. The authors range in age from 11 to 18, and their subjects are just as varied. From first bra to first love to years of agonizing periods to enduring the Hopi corn-grinding ceremony to being raised Amish, the essays lead readers through the events in each narrator's life that epitomize the independence, confusion, and fear of growing up. More uplifting than some similar collections, the pieces have positive overtones without being sentimental or sappy, yet the subjects are often heartrending. There's a nice balance between serious and more lighthearted reflections, and the style and tone of each selection reflect the individual authors. Teen editor Coon has compiled an interesting mix, and made sure there's something here for every girl, no matter her background or personal circumstances.-Linda Bindner, Truman State University, Kirksville, MO Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
