Children's Literature - Sue Poduska
This book is part of the "Wicked History" series. Far from being dry, it is a gripping account of the life of the first ruler of Russia to be called tsar. It is Russia during the 1500s. Orphaned as a baby, Ivan was controlled and abused by the boyars, the ruling class of landowners. As a teenager, he ruled a gang set on terrorizing Moscow. By the time he gained control of Russia, Ivan was distrustful even of his friends. He started terrorizing the entire country. In one six week period, his army killed 15,000 citizens of a Russian town, Novgorod. Ultimately, under his rule, the territory of Russia was expanded greatly. This book contains a lot of violence, but the author is careful not to condone Ivan's actions. The book is well-researched, especially given the time in which the events occurred. The book includes a map showing Russia's expansion, a graphic of Ivan's friends and enemies, numerous illustrations, a timeline, a glossary, a list of books and websites for more information, an index, an author's note, and a bibliography.
