Ives Plays Ives / Record # 4 in "Charles Ives, the 100th Anniversary"

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ken Smith
Listening to this archival recording of Ives at the keyboard is like hearing William Burroughs read from his novel NAKED LUNCH -- it gives a true sense of what's missing on the printed page. Like Burroughs's prose, Ives's music has a veneer of familiarity over the idiosyncratic voice, which -- punctuated with dense imagery and a vital spontaneity -- veers off into uncharted territory. Taken from four recording sessions held between 1933 and 1943, these excerpts from the "Concord" Sonata, the unfinished "Emerson" Concerto, and the 23 Studies translate to the digital age with a minimum of technological culture shock. Multiple essays and meticulous annotations make this CD an invaluable historic document, but the material is also cleverly arranged to appeal to the general listener. Although these excerpts lack their original contexts, a new context emerges from this program taken as a whole.
All Music Guide - "Blue" Gene Tyranny
Ives playing spontaneously (improvising) on published and unpublished material/ideas...reveals the creative process in its searching mode (apart from the necessary structural work), with Ives enthusiastically letting his hands discover what cannot be pre-conceived. Especially remarkable are the so-called "X, Y, Z Improvisations."
