Overview

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the governing body for some 400,000 college athletes in the United States. During football’s bowl season and basketball’s March Madness, the NCAA likes to remind its millions of TV viewers that it represents student athletes: most of its members compete as amateurs and will never go pro. Somehow, that message seems increasingly lost in a sea of multimillion-dollar TV deals, recruitment scandals, back-channel payouts, fan hysteria, player misbehavior both civil and criminal, and the routine bending—or flouting—of college and NCAA rules about player academic eligibility.

Far from this madding crowd, the nation’s oldest, most prestigious private colleges and universities go about the business of making scholar-athletes from the ranks of their admitted classes, without special recruitment or scholarship money, and demanding and getting the best from them both on the field and in the classroom. Using a model that has changed very little since it was founded in 1954, the Ivy League offers a bracing corrective to the excesses of big-money college sports. In Ivy League Athletes, veteran sportswriter Sal Maiorana follows nine student-athletes from seven Ivy League campuses through the 2011–2012 season. Along the way he shows us the qualities of heart, mind, and body that got them there and allow them to prosper on the field and in the classroom. The book includes a foreword by former Harvard and current NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Written in a friendly manner that connects with each subject to let them tell his or her own story, Maiorana also brings a journalistic detachment in the playful, narrative prose that ties the stories together. Though Maiorana could have given a little more information about the athletes' academic lives, he captures the distinct qualities it takes to be an Ivy League student-athlete and has created a lively tribute to these special young men and women."—Publishers Weekly

“Maiorana has captured the essence of what collegiate athletics should be all about. The Ivy League, where intercollegiate athletics was born, still adheres to the concept of what the words ‘student athlete’ mean.  Through these engrossing stories about nine of those true student-athletes, representing schools and teams from the Ancient Eight, we learn that athletic competition does not build character—it reveals character.”—Marv Levy

“If you are a fan of intercollegiate athletics you must read this book. Sal Maiorana delivers incredible insight into the lives of nine people who fit the true definition of the phrase ‘student athlete.’ Their personal stories, in the classroom and on the playing fields, are incredibly compelling.”—John Wildhack, ESPN executive vice president, production

As stated in the prologue: "the goal is to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the life of the student-athletes in the Ivy League." Maiorana (Buffalo Bills: The Complete and Illustrated History) first introduces the Ivy League conference, it's peculiarities and commitment to academic rigor, before delving into the lives of nine student-athletes with diverse personalities and levels of success. An overachiever who struggles with whether or not to play both soccer and lacrosse at Harvard and the local high school football legend who finds out that things don't come as easy at Yale are a bit on the predictable side. The story of a Yale field hockey goalie battling adult muscular dystrophy is simultaneously uplifting and heartbreaking. There is an account of a Dartmouth soccer star from Zimbabwe, as well as a chapter focusing on a Columbia hurdler who battles injuries and a difficult past to achieve her childhood dream. Written in a friendly manner that connects with each subject to let them tell his or her own story, Maiorana also brings a journalistic detachment in the playful, narrative prose that ties the stories together. Though Maiorana could have given a little more information about the athletes' academic lives, he captures the distinct qualities it takes to be an Ivy League student-athlete and has created a lively tribute to these special young men and women.
