Izzy, Willy-Nilly: An Unforgettable, Life-Changing Novel That Gives Teenagers a Different Perspective On Drinking and Driving And Its Consequences!
Izzy, Willy-Nilly is about a 15 year old girl named Izzy Lingard who has to deal with a disability for the rest of her life. Izzy has everything in life: a supportive family, fantastic friends, and has a spot on the cheerleading team. A senior named Marco Griggers asks Izzy out on a date. Little did she know it would end in a disastrous car crash, losing her leg. This accident changed her life forever, making her life become a challenge. Her friends don't want to be friends with a cripple and her family doesn't understand how she really feels. Suddenly the dorky, no-nothing girl at school named Rosamunde offers her hand in friendship. Rosamunde may be the only person to help Izzy conquer her new life. Izzy, Willy-Nilly only had a few themes/messages including being happy with who you are and what you look like because things could have always been worse, knowing who your real friends are, and making good decisions about a person you just met. Even though Izzy lost her leg from the car accident, nothing worse happened like being on the verge of dying or having a terminal illness. Izzy wasn't going to feel like herself for awhile, but that didn't mean she would completely change. People continuously told Izzy, "How could such a horrible thing happen to such a nice girl." Her sweet personality toward others never changed, but she was more self-conscious with her physical appearance and didn't want people staring at her all the time. In reality, this accident made Izzy stronger! Knowing who Izzy's real friends were helped her realize who she was again. Her three old best friends weren't as close to her after the accident and wouldn't be caught dead with a cripple. Rosamunde, the dorky girl, comes in wanting to be Izzy's friend. She's always honest and open with Izzy and said she would be there for her. This wasn't the type of friend Izzy would ever have, but Rosamunde made Izzy feel like herself again. The last theme was getting to know a personto make a good decision. In this case, Izzy made a bad decision. Izzy hardly even knew this senior and got in the car with him when he had too much to drink. That was a very poor decision. What I liked about this novel was how it was realistic. It really made me look and think about life in a whole new perspective and how quickly a life could change due to drinking and driving. It's scary what a drunk driver could do to change people's life in an instant. I liked the way the author portrayed ideas to the reader by making the novel so realistic; it makes it more interesting to read and you're able to put yourself in Izzy's shoes! The only thing I disliked about the novel was that it was repetitive. When Izzy was at the hospital, all the days were like the first day. Nothing had ever changed. Someone should read this book because it's a very good life lesson for teenagers who have or will experience drinking and driving and its effects on a person. It was interesting and it was easy to relate to Izzy's position. It was a real page turner, with challenges and obstacles Izzy faced. It's a quick read and easy to understand. It's a novel to cherish and is relatable in many ways.
