Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ken Marantz
The "fearless Pirate called Captain Scallywag" is a youngster who has a delightful adventure in a fantasy that may or may not be just in his imagination. Distraught at having lost his constant companion, J.A. Teddy, our hero cries until his tears bring pixies, goblins, and elves to his aid. The Queen of Fairies tells them of a faraway castle where lost teddy bears go. Warned of the giant ogre that guards it, Captain Scallywag and his friends sail magically away to rescue the teddy. They subdue the sleeping ogre and free hundreds of teddy bears that float away with their "Lost" tags. The Captain is very happy to find his Teddy. When he tells his Mom about his adventure, she laughs at his dream. But who can explain the "Lost" ticket on his Teddy, or those on the teddy bears of other happy children? The text provides a minimal frame upon which Rowe builds a thoroughly delightful visual fantasy. He begins with the Captain and his friends, each loaded with personality. Then he adds the pirate crew and the individual fairy-tale characters. The textless double-page scene of the tagged bears flying away in formation and staring out at us is almost spookily humorous. Rowe's imagination is boundless.
