Overview

Unlike the standard Baroque trio sonata (in which two instruments are joined by a continuo group comprising a harpsichord and other instruments that fill out the harmonies and provide a bass line), Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts (1741) were conceived as works of true chamber music. There are five "concerts," each of which consists of three or four short pieces, and most are descriptive. There are homages to Forqueray and Marais, a self-portrait, musical representations of states of mind ("La Timide" and "L'Indiscrète"), and miniature tone paintings ("Le Vézinet"). Every one is enchanting in its melodiousness, harmonic ingenuity, and gracious expressivity. This recording by the veteran harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, violinist Rachel Podger, and gambist Jonathan Manson is simply the best yet. Not only do they play with great suppleness and precise ensemble, but they also characterize the music with sweet affection. The sound quality is also first-rate, with glistening strings and a delicately tintinnabulary harpsichord. Not to be missed.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone - Julie Anne Sadie
These are balanced and refreshingly musical performances that will draw you back again and again.... Pinnock's playing is lively and engaging, inspiring and inspired. His accuracy is breathtaking, his ornamentation jewel-like. Podger and Manson respond with clarity and shapely phrasing.
