Overview

When the bodies of murdered prostitutes start piling up in Whitechapel, Lilly knows it’s a fellow reaper gone rogue—a man the living call Jack the Ripper.
***

Lilly Gordon delivers death to unsuspecting souls, Fate’s decisions carried out with a simple touch. But when a woman is found brutally slain before her destined time to die, Jack, Lilly’s ex-lover and a fellow reaper, is fingered for the crime, the evidence undeniable.

As the only one who’s been close to Jack, Lilly finds herself dragged into the investigation by Lord Mason Archer, chancellor to the reapers. But Lilly and Mason have a past of their own, and the long hours spent in Mason’s company leave Lilly falling for the difficult man who not only infuriates her, but makes her heart race. With the latest victim mutilated beyond recognition, it seems the killings cannot get any more heinous—but there’s more than one force at work, and Lilly soon realizes there are things far worse than death and dismemberment when dealing with Jack the Ripper.

A new take on an old crime...

I happen to like paranormal fiction and historical fiction this book has found a way to successfully combine both. The idea of the reapers as soul "recyclers" is one I haven't really seen before. Also attributing the murders to these barely seen people while simultanously casting doubt on the idea made for a great read. Highly reccommended.

Wow. Where to begin? I absolutely loved these characters and their world. Lilly, a young woman who is new to the afterlife, having died giving birth to her only daughter, is both vulnerable and strong as she adjusts to the sometimes harsh realities of being a reaper of souls--a job she carries out with mercy and a light touch. And even though one of her past lovers may be a horrific murderer (a story thread which is handled tastefully and with great delicacy, so that even this scardy-cat reader didn't feel uncomfortable in the crime scenes), the story is really Lilly's deep down, as she comes into her own through incredibly difficult personal trials--and intoxicating, mind-blowing love.

For me, that's what makes JACK a cut above a lot of romances and thrillers out there; it's about a living, breathing, faulted person, not a mental construct or a tinker-toy puzzle. Lilly felt real and deeply emotional, just like life. I could totally identify with her struggle to sort out her feelings and priorities as she tries to do right by her loved ones--and let me tell you, the men in her life are h-h-h-ot and sensual (Ahem. You may find yourself breathing hard and unable to see the page), wonderfully heroic and deeply caring in different ways--any woman would love to have Lilly's romantic dilemma! I hope more stories will be set in this world. I want to see each man in Lilly's life find happiness in love, or at least a hot interlude or three. :-)

Wow! I am a contemporary romance fan but I started out a paranormal romance fan. I love Cali's Mermaid Isle and Highland series and after devouring those books I wanted to read one of her early paranormal books. "Jack" is a twist on the Jack The Ripper killings.

This book had me in emotional turmoil. From lost loves and lives I was conflicted on how I wanted the outcome to unfold. This book was not predictable It made me a nervous wreck and I loved it! LOL. Kudos to Cali for thinking outside the box on this one although I could not sleep until I finished the book.

    Promising, but...

It could have been further developed. The story felt rushed especially at the end and there could have been better development in the protagonist.

But interesting take on such a story.

    Good story line

The author had a giod sory line however there were many parts that were slow. The same inner issues over and over. The main female chareacter was strong and so was the male. This is a author I will read again in the future.

    Redeeming

I loved the first half of this novel. The background stories were fascinating if there was a lot of testosterone in this novel. Didn't think Corwin was really needed, but the end was reedeeming and I enjoyed it greatly.
