Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This low budget lift-the-flap book is a paperback retelling of a very famous childhood story. The art is appropriate and colorful, but the real value, apart from the book's low price, is the fun of reading the updated words. To the tireless reader of the one-more-story-before-the-light-goes-out bedtimes, this book will be just plain fun to read. The fresh interpretation will give scope to drama and a few chuckles as well. A worthy passage follows. "Fee Fi Fo Fum, I smell the blood of a small human! . . . Don't be silly," said the giant's wife. "Sit down and eat your lunch. It's salad." 2005, Child's Play, Ages 3 to 7.

My son was very intrigued with the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, so I decided to order this book. The book has flip ups so I assumed it would be appropriate for a young child. I would not recommend anyone to buy this book. The word STUPID is used a few times in the story to describe Jack and there is a line about Jack's father being KILLED by the giant. I don't want my son to use these words at such a young age.

I read this as a child and then again with my boy, and I, and we, got so much out of it. It teaches that those who go that extra mile get rewarded for their efforts. In this case it was freedom from the thieving giant. A good builder of courage for kids against bullies.
