Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the series "Short Tales," this book presents a well-known fairy tale, utilizing "frequently used words and repeating language patterns" to make it accessible to early readers. Lively color illustrations with dark outlines have an anime-like quality to them, and are accompanied by three or four sentences of text per page. Unlike many early readers, the text is printed in a small font. The retelling of the beanstalk tale is conventional, with the typical repeating of the "Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman," that will be familiar to many early readers. Although it may be a desirable purchase for libraries seeking to increase their collection of early readers, there is little to distinguish this average book from many other early readers.
