Editorial Reviews

Steve Gietschier
A broadcaster since 1948 when he went on the air at WOSU, the radio station of Ohio State University, Jack Buck has fashioned a career with highlights including long stints with the St. Louis Cardinals and Monday Night Football. Like many announcers, Buck is beloved in his home team’s city and, in his case, across the wide area served by the Cardinals radio network. Nearing the end of his tenure, Buck has set down his memoirs, assisted by Rains and Broeg, the eminence grise of St. Louis sports journalism. This book reads like Jack Buck sounds, and that’s good. A reasonable guess is that Rains used a tape recorder to capture Buck’s story and that he and Broeg had the good sense to leave the cadence of Buck’s speech alone. If this a a book not so much written as spoken, so be it. Every announcer gets fired now and then. But throughout his career, Buck has had the unusually good fortune of going from one position to the next, virtually without skipping a beat. These quick transitions make for some interesting stories and, it seems, have influecned Buck’s political views, some of which are set out here. Buck could have spared us that, though, and talked more about his various partners, especially the inimitable Mike Shannon.
