Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
On the day his great uncle Mungo passes away, Jack's life turns very strange indeed. The convenience store clerk he sees every day suddenly transforms into a grimacing, threatening pirate. A talking, singing parrot lands on the dining room table in the middle of the Jones' family dinner. Most startling of all, Jack finds out that he has just inherited the Pirate Curse, which was originally settled against his ancestor, Blackstrap Morgan, ten generations ago. Anna Tortuga, Hellfire Drake, and Captain Kelso will be coming after Jack with one goal in mind: revenge. Soon, Jack's life is tipped completely upside down. His mother is busy with a frenzy of phone calls, trying to locate any sort of expert who can help them combat the curse. His father is engaged in a frenzy of lap-swimming, trying to deny what is going on. Jack himself is trying to stay alive, as danger presents itself in the most unexpected ways: his teacher Mrs. Lemon (intimidating enough on her own) changes into Hellfire Drake and chases him around the classroom with a sword; a pair of socks transforms into a large spider; the doctor transforms into a knife-throwing Anna Tortuga; and more. Each presentation of danger seems worse and comes sooner than the one before. The Curse is never going to let Jack be, unless he can figure out a way to make it end. Judith Rossell's fast-paced adventure tale is as outlandish as it is swashbuckling and as humorous as it is menacing. Readers are sure to agree this story is pure fun from start to finish.

Gr 3-6
An Australian author known primarily for her puzzle picture books tries her hand at a novel with mixed results. When his Great Uncle Mungo dies, and Poll, a talking parrot, appears on the scene, Jack discovers that he is the next male in line to inherit his family's curse: without warning, people around him turn into pirates and proceed to attack him. The boy learns that he is a direct descendant of the fearsome Blackstrap Morgan, who allegedly betrayed his shipmates and sent them off to hang without their promised portion of the treasure. These ghostly pirates take control of other people's bodies to exact their revenge on their enemy's descendants. There is not much characterization here, and all the adults are portrayed as nitwits who really can't do anything to fix the problem. Jack's only real help comes from his friend Rachel. In the end, he learns to deal creatively with his foes and finally figures out how to get them out of his life. While the story is not much more than a repetitive series of episodes of people-including Jack's teacher and his parents-getting possessed by swaggering buccaneers, this quick read will still have appeal to reluctant readers and fans of pirate yarns.

Kirkus Reviews
There's nothing like inheriting a previously unsuspected family curse to add spice to an ordinary life, as young Jack discovers when a distant grand uncle dies. Suddenly, his strait-laced teacher, his routine-loving dentist dad and other adults are being temporarily transformed into leering, well-armed, larger-than-life pirates with names like Hellfire Drake or Tortuga Anna, and coming after Jack in revenge for a 300-year-old betrayal. Rossell moves the tale along briskly, supplying Jack with both an ancient, talkative parrot to fill in the backstory-and to provide jolly commentary on each successive attack: "Ha ha ha, they're after you now, shipmate!"-as well as a generous fund of native wit that comes in handy once he realizes that there's no way he's going to best his assailants in a physical contest. By the end, Jack triumphs, and even finds a way to lay the curse to rest-but the pirate ghosts aren't completely gone, as all of the grown-ups who hosted them are showing uncharacteristic streaks of wildness. Well-stocked with funny characters and situations, here's a rousing tale for all young hearties, with outstanding read-aloud potential to boot. (Fantasy. 9-11)
