Everyone longs to be precious. Eleven-year-old Marnie Evans is no different. She wishes on stars for parents who adore her, even though her family is dysfunctional. She also believes that jack rabbits and a boot-wearing Texas angel show her mysterious signs of things to come.
To escape her mother's neglect over summer break, Marnie finds a short cut through the woods to Garner State Park. There she discovers yodeling cowboy ranger Rick Carpenter and his wife, Claire, who live on site.
From buried boxes to colorful characters such as Bible-thumper, Shelby Love, and peacock feather man, Vaughn Conner, Marnie eventually finds what she's looking for along the banks of the Frio River. Don't miss the boat on this environmentally lush ride that explores the mystery of connection and power of forgiveness.

I don't usually write reviews but I truly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. It is heartwarming and unexpectedly funny at times. But most importantly, you find yourself really caring about the characters - so much so that when you finish you are left wondering what happens to these people you have grown to like so much. I think this is the mark of a really great book. I look forward to reading another book by Dorraine Darden!

Jack Rabbit Moon by Dorraine Darden is a beautifully told story with a sparkling, tender heart. Marnie Evans, the young heroine of the book, is at once to be both pitied and admired pitied for her life filled with hard knocks, but admired for her spunk in making the most of it as she befriends a young ranger and his wife at a state park in rural Texas. As the story unfolds, you find yourself drawn into the intersection of these three characters lives, a journey that will warm your blood and stir your heart. There¿s much to admire in Darden¿s writing style: her skill in convincingly telling the story from three distinctly different points of view, her care to give readers a true sense and appreciation of the story¿s setting (Garner State Park), and her delightful use of occasional humor and unexpected one-liners. I¿m looking forward to reading more by Dorraine Darden.

The scenic beauty of Garner State Park along with its long history of family traditions comes alive in this wonderful novel about a little girl who submerges herself in the wonders of nature to escape her wicked home life. From a mom you¿ll love to hate to a park ranger that will steal your heart, this book amazingly pulls on all of your senses and yanks at your heart strings. I am anxiously awaiting the next book from this new author.

Author Dorraine Darden's Jack Rabbit Moon took this reader on an emotional adventure filled with the sights and smells of Garner State Park. I especially liked the story being told through the three main characters. It is like real life...everyone sees things through their own emotions and perspectives. This is a good read. L. Peters

This book is populated with characters trying to do the best they can, with the knowledge and experience they have and the situations in which they find themselves. Some do well, some not so well. And caught in middle is Marnie, who has experienced more of the negative side of life than a 12-year old should - unloved, ridiculed and pushed aside. But thanks to the writing talents of the author and her ability to turn a phrase, Marnie is not maudlin in the least but emerges as a strong, optimistic girl with a great sense of humor. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll think. And you'll enjoy the lush settings described throughout the book. Thanks for a great read, Ms. Darden. May you give us many more.
