Children's Literature - Tracy RiddleThis book takes a classic tale and turns it into a parent/child interactive activity. Parent and child are both given specific parts to read while exploring the story of Jack, the brave young boy who sets off to reclaim items from the Giant that stole from his parents long ago and killed his father. The text provides icons at the bottom of each page to indicate the reader, as well as different sized fonts (large lettering for the child, small for the adult reader). The child's reading part is shorter and more simplified. This method provides a great opportunity for kids to show their capabilities while keeping the story moving. Turn-taking page by page keeps both parties actively participating. Having the parent read first allows a demonstration of intonation and using a clear reading voice, as many students on this reading level are just beginning to practice reading out loud. Learning vocabulary is first bolded on the parent side and then repeated on the child's side. The pictures are friendly and traditional. Part of the leveled "We Both Read" series, this book does a great job of promoting reading in the home.
